Went to check out our loyal hedgehog grounds today and were pleased to find the cute little buggers are starting to sprout! Still need a lot more rain before they go crazy but we managed to harvest a modest amount for dinner tonight. Forgot the camera so no habitat pics (stay tuned!) Lots of scaly chanterelles about and bug addled boletes as well. We did manage to find one keeper, an admirable bolete...
Dentinum Umbilicatum in my kreel, the ultimate mush-hunting apparatus:

the pristine Boletus Mirablis:

 the "haul":

Last but not least, the monster Boletus Edulis, too buggy to take home. Luckily I had the camera phone

Can you believe we almost walked right by it???! Another fun day in the PNW woods with my favorite girl and a lot of cool mushrooms. Hunt on shroomerites...

Excellent...beef stroganoff...
Yes, CureCat, kreels are cool. Flip it open, or drop it through the hatch, if it's not too big, heh, heh...

Great pics, that boletus mirablis specimen sure is perfect!
I don't know the first thing about those hedgehogs, but they look really tasty. Do you know if they occur in Europe as well? I know its larger cousin, hydnum repandum does grow here.

Hydnum Repandum = Dentinum Repandum. The D. Umbilicatum variety is slightly smaller and has a dimple but is equally edible. If you have repandum you probably have the umbilicatum in your area as well because they supposed to mingle together. Both are comparable to the chanterelle in color, texture and flavor plus they are easier to clean and easier to recognize. I suggest, Koraks, that you get to know your hedgehogs a litte better 'cause they ARE tasty!!

Hydnum Repandum grows in North America as well. Some local varities in Alaska include a white variety of Hydnum Repandum, in my favorite spot for them you can find 20-30lbs with some specimens easily weighing above half a pound.
