If you have an electric hot water tank, you can put it on a timer.  Instead of heating water 24hours, set the timer to turn on the water heater 3 - 4 hours or so before you usually wake up and to turn off at your waking time also.  Water is hot in the morning for a shower.  The water in the tank remains plenty warm enuff for the evening dishes etc as long as you have a well insulated tank.

So you advise stealing? Way to go. That sure makes the site look good!

Hopefully your uncle was caught and prosecuted.

I'm going to have to agree with luvdemshrooms on that one, stealing is never OK, even if the electrical company is a monopoly and their preferred method of electrical production is coal-burning, which of course has adverse effects on the environment and air-quality. Not all is produced by burning coal, but I've read its about 50% in the U.S.

As for his Uncle and him being arrested for stealing electricity, hmmmm....no comment.

Besides, most new meters today are completely digital. The old ones used the spinning metal wheel, but the new ones today are more like mini-computers, so I don't think it would work anyway (if you ignore the "should I" part of it).

As for that timer trick, that was a good idea! Run the water heater only during certain times of the day. Seems pretty Logical to be. One question: how would you hook up a timer to an electrically water heater? Most (if not all) are hard-wired to the wall via 3 thick wires and not just a plug in a wall outlet....would you have to integrate a timer into the circuit breaker box or something? You got me on that one....

Good stuff thou

the flaw in that logic is that it takes 3hrs of continuous heating to get
the water back up to the desired temp, do that twice a day and you've
negated the purpose of the timer, with out the timer it'll only cycle on
a few times each our and only or a few minutes

Good point my friend, not to mention the cost and labor to install the timer....

Better off wrapping your water heater with a couple layers of some thick fiber glass.

But, at least he was thinking, seems like thermodynamics wins this round.

I disagree only to the extent that I havent done enuff research as to the amount of power used to maintain all day vs the amount to bring it back to temp.  it isnt right cold when the timer starts up the heater.  The water is still luke warm.  3 hrs might be more than nessesary it was only a guess.  I have a Black and decker power consumption dealy that I will use to test the theory both ways.
You could very well be right but I suspect you might be underestimating the tanks ability to maintain the temp while the timr is off.  I think possibly even one hour on will return it to the temp the tank is set at.
I have a solar loop I use in the summer to suplement my hot water heater and I can turn the heater off all summer using solar alone...
More experiments to do and results to graph.....
