FFXIII first impressions...
    #12170884 -

Ok, so now that it's actually out and you've played it (assuming you have), what do you think?

*there may be some very minor spoilers ahead*

I'm maybe an hour or two into it and at this point, while the cinematics, graphics, and overall presentation are very slick, I'm having a difficult time becoming immersed into the story.

First of all, Sazh, is the epitome of a cliche with the whole Eddie Murphy/Chris Tucker/Martin Lawrence shtick.

Snow and his band of self-proclaimed "heroes" are naive on an astronomical level.  Ugh, bullets flying everywhere and that one nameless doofus in the group wants to lie down and take a nap.  It's as if nobody takes the enemy seriously at all, yet we are supposed to feel empathetic about their dire situation.

And the whole Mom part... "Moms are tough!"

When Snow drops her and she plummets to her doom, I know I was supposed to have some kind of emotional reaction, but all I could do was cringe at the cliche cheesyness.

I'm sure (actually, I hope) that the battles will get more interesting as I progress through the game, but as of right now, I'm not too fond of the system.  It doesn't seem like there is enough time to really consider strategy, it feels rushed.  I'm always in a hurry to attack exactly when the ATB gauge(WTF is ATB anyway?) fills up.

I know it's still way to early for me to pass judgment, but so far my first impression is Meh or possibly even < Meh.

you don't get into the paradigm system or the crystarium system for a few hours, so battles and gameplay will become much more complex.    also most people are saying that later on sazh starts out lame like the comic relief, but later becomes the deepest character in the game.    I'm only 3-4 hours in myself, so I'll have to wait on that...

and as for the cheese...you're playing a jrpg.  it happens.  did you really expect anything different?  the plus is, it's considerably less than many other games.

Lost Odyssey is a pretty good example of a JRPG without an abundance of aged cheese.

I'm 6 hours into the game, and loving it so far.

I actually like the slight deviation from the classic FF theme. The battle system is quite fun once you get far into the game and its actually challenging to fight some of the bigger enemies. I thought the battles would be easy due to the Auto Battle button, but you can't rely on it solely. You really have to learn to use the Paradigm shifts and learn to chain your attacks well to stagger the larger guys.

Now if the damn Square-enix site wuld let me redeem the damn free item code that came with the game.....grrrrr...

I'm playing it on the PS3, btw. I'd recommend anyone that has both an xbox and a PS3, to buy it on the PS3. The xbox version has a cut-down resolution, due to the fact that DVD's just can't handle all of the data, even though it comes on 3 dvd's. PS3 = 1 blu-ray :awesome:

Xbox360 = 576p
PS3 = 1080p

Last but not least, I'm glad to finally be playing this game, since I've been watching trailers for it since Oct 2006.....

because i don't think i'll be able to get to the part where everything opens up ....

i'm actually out of town right now at a friend's and he got the game so we've been playing it, but i have to go home next week and that's definitely not enough time to finish the game and i'm crankey because i don't own a PS3 myself, nor can i afford one so i will probably not be able to finish this game for quite some time. and i'm not looking forward to going through all the linear bullshit again if i do somehow manage to obtain a PS3 and the game any time soon.

I hadn't messed with the crystarium menu since chapter 2...

I had about 4000 CP for each character.

It's smooth sailing now.

First 7 chapters are sloooooooooooow as fuuuuuuuuck. But then they let you make some free choices and explore a bit and it gets INFINITELY more fun. The characters still annoy the shit out of me though. So 1-dimensional I can't help but laugh. "I AM TEH HERO! I WILL SAVE U!"

yah i kinda think the cheesy dialogue is some huge translation error, or at least i would hope, because they completely come out of nowhere, like i can just hear some Japanese person saying these things in English only because the lacked the vocab, but in their language i bet it sounds alot more bad ass

anyways Ive kinda got the same impressions as everyone else, i basically just got past the point where snow is chipping ice   trying not to give any spoilers is kinda fun

i actually like the story, Ive been reading all the dialogue in the menu system each time something new pops up and i feel that it helps keep you in the story more.  half of it you already know from the cut scenes but there is some extra info in there.

i feel the graphics are great, a few points have been fairly epic, but overall i was expecting more...but it is still very early.  i think the biggest flaw is the enemy's, the graphics on them is very inferior to everything else.

as for the battle system, i was really let down for the first 2 hours or so, but now its starting to pick up a little bit and getting slightly interesting, and i expect it to start to get better.  i kind of miss not being able to control all the charactors tho, it makes it hard to pick the right gear because you can't really feel how much damage they are doing etc because your so concentrated on your charactor and plus all the damage indicators overlap so fast.

Overall, it is a very good game.  I think the story is pretty good, and so far I'm liking snow's story line the best, but yeah the few dialgues that have been mentioned do a really good job of ruining the moment but there over quick so not to bad.

Yeah, I've actually come around and started enjoying the game.  The crystarium system is pretty cool.  For some reason I was under the impression that just because there wasn't going to be a standard leveling system that I wouldn't be able to build a stronger character as the game went on and that all of the statistical growth would be happening behind the scenes and out of the view and control of the player.

I'm enjoying the combat now too that it has become a bit more engaging.

The characters really made a bad first impression on me, but I guess now that the cheesy introductions are out of the way, they are becoming more tolerable, and dare I say, a bit more interesting.

And Head, you were right about Sazh I think.  He's probably my favorite character so far.  Second favorite would be Lightening, then Snow, then Vanille, then Hope.

Vanille is second to last because of all of her little "Oo!" and "Ahhh!" sounds like she's being clitorally stimulated at all times.

And Hope is last because he is... well... a pussy basically.

I don't have Fang yet, so I'm curious to see what she's all about.

As far as character development goes, I too enjoy Sazh the most. I just can't stand the way he runs when you control him.

meh, i got it and i think it is a huge pile of crap. i feel compelled to finish it just because i have finished every other FF game, but jesus...

let me list the ways: (i am about halfway through the game, just fought the emporer... and if you think that is a spoiler then you are retarded because it was obvious shit was gonna go down over that old man)

1. no real exploration. you are running a tunnel going from cut scen to cut scene.
2. way too many cut scenes, and i especially hate those retarded moments between two 5 minute cut scenes where all you have to do is walk through a room... seriously, wtf?
3. no mini games.... really. if you think that giant machine was a real mini game you suck.
4. you barely use eidolons and they arent even that great. gimme FF3 espers over that shit.
5. what is the point of having this elaborate 3d skill chart if you dont really have to make choices?
6. weapon and accessory upgrades are retarded.

so far the only redeeming quality about the game is the amazing graphics and the new real time fighting style is growing on me.

otherwise, ff 7,8 and 9 blow this one out the water.

Is this game worth getting, or at least worth a rent.  I enjoyed Fable for the original xbox.  However I've never played any FF games.  Is it turn based or is it more like an action RPG?

as with any rpg, you take solace in the fact that you eventually will have the best weapon or whatever. even if you screw up, no big deal because you will eventually have enough money or whatever... not this one. unless you bought the FF guide then you probably wont ever get hermes boots or other great items... which wouldnt bother me if this game was something i would want to play again at a later date... like every fallout has been.

they could have done a lot better and a lot more with the weapons... since they didnt, they should have just left the next best weapon up to a hidden chest, mini game, or quest item.

Big deal. Very few people play the game just to get the best weapons. That might be a factor for me in FF14, since you're playing with/against other people.

That's one of the reasons I stray away from games like WoW etc, it's just a constant quest to get bigger better weapons/armor.

While I'm a fan of the game so far, I will say that the linear crap is starting to annoy me a bit. I enjoyed it at first because it helped to develop the storyline quicker. Now it just seems as though I'm playing a really long version of the first 2 hours of any previous FF game.

Did the beginning of the game remind anyone of FF10? Similar intro, thrown into battle on a bridge as the city goes to shit around you.

it's not hard to get the ultimate weapons, you just gotta sell credit/incentive chips for gil, spam your weapons/accessories with the items that give small XP till you get 3XP then use one or two of the ones that give large XP till you level, and repeat, then use one of the items to transform it.  it's kinda trial and error, but it's really not difficult and isn't that bad.  it's a lot like FFVIII's weapon upgrade except without specific parts.  it's really a lot easier than it may seem.  just stick with it.

I actually love it.

I really was not that excited for it, as Final Fantasy Versus XIII looks much more to my liking, and I absolutely CAN NOT WAIT for that one.

But I caved in and bought XIII to hold me over until Versus is released.

little did I know I would love it!

I actually popped a dose and played it the first day it came out, quite an experience! It looked amazing! especially the part where they get marked by the Fal'Cie and become I'cie.

I actually really like it, it seems they went back to FFVII style storyline a bit, I like the story and setting.

I thought I wouldn't like the characters, but now it turns out I like lightning a whole lot! I can relate to her more than any other characters, and Ive never had a fav female video game character!

Sazh made me laugh more than a few times that night.

The battle system is awesome! The summons look great, it really is just a beautiful game.

The only wish I had was maybe a bit more free roaming, like towns and such like that. But then again the amazing looking game/cut scenes/story are more important to me than towns, so if those have to be sacrificed to make amazingly epic storylines for RPG's from here on out, so be it

Im looking foward to see where they go with versus, as I heard they are using a world map much like early final fantasy's in Versus.

I really am enjoying the game though!

I keep loading my save from the part where Vanille and Sazh get to the real forest (not the proto-eco place) and admiring the view from the cliff.

I wish I was tripping on some clean LSD when I got to that part of the game. Makes me miss some of the views and cliffs in Puerto Rico. :sigh:

I've given the game a break for awhile though, I have finals next week, so I'll only be playing about 2-3 hours a day. I'm 15 hours into the game, so by next week everyone will be way ahead of me.

Please keep the spoilers to a minimum.

Yeah, I'm digging the soundtrack too. I especially like that one drum and bass sounding track that plays in the techno-forest...  If anybody can post an MP3 of that song it'd be greatly appreciated.

The battle song that takes place at the house in Palumpolum was pretty good. I actually like the whole soundtrack so far, they matched the songs with the environments pretty well.

I'm at the part where Sazh does the unthinkable. I then saved the game to work on school stuff and haven't played since. I hope my roommate stops watching the same fucking movie over and over so I can get some play time in before next week.

Do your characters feel underpowered since you haven't been upgrading your weapons?  I've been upgrading everybody's weapons, but now the problem is that when I come across a new level one weapon, I have no idea how to compare them to the weapons I already have because I don't remember the base statistics for the weapon I've been upgrading.

For example, I just found a new weapon for Lightning.  I've been using the weapon she started with, the blazefire carbine or whatever it is, and I leveled it up to 10 and it has something like 55 str and 52 mag.  And the new weapon I just found has 8 strength and 8 magic.  I don't want to waste all of my items to level this new weapon up to 10 only to find out it's shittier.

And what's the deal when you dismantle a weapon you've upgraded?  I think I dismantled one of Hope's weapon after putting all sorts of items into it to upgrade it to level 5, then when I dismantle it, all I got was one crappy item that does maybe 50xp when I apply to another weapon.  I guess I would have been better off selling it.

best thing to do is spam your weapon when its at 1x EXP with a bunch of the organic components that don't add much.  like X fluid or claws etc.  use 36 of these on a weapon till it gets 3x EXP, then spam it with the items like superconductors/crankshafts etc that give a bunch of exp.  don't do it too much since once you weapon tops out you waste any overused EXP.
theres 3 weapon tiers:  the stock weapons you start out with go lvl 1-26, which makes it * lvl.  then tier 2 is lvl 10-61 I think.  then you get that particular form of ultima weapon once tier 2 is maxed.

there are two weapons for each person i think that decrease hp or have stagger lock, which means you cant stagger an opponent.... sell those.

i have been using the very first weapons upgraded to tier 2 max, havent figured out what stone makes them go to tier 3 though yet... but the first weapon maxed out for lightning to tier two * adds something like 240 to str and mag.

I'm actually doing pretty good considering I haven't upgraded my weapons. Don't feel too underpowered, though some battles get tough. I'm using the Gladius for Lightning. I've been pretty anal about searching every area for those treasure pods. I've got 3 weapons for Lightning so far, all from pods only 20 hours into the game.

I've learned that using Libra (to find weaknesses) and then manually selecting abilities is working very well. The most important thing I've learned to do is switch to saboteur/synergist at the beginning of tough matches. It can make all the difference.

I'll probably cash in the credit chips and upgrade the best weapons I have, next time I play.

I should be finishing my term papers today, after that its game on.

don't sell them.  even though they have stagger lock pretty sure those weapons are the only ones that get the highest stats.  I know lightnings weapon with stagger lock, once made ultima weapon, has 750/750 str/mag, and nothing else is as strong.  so that's still worth keeping.  you'll also need to keep it if you want the weapons trophy.

it's barely a gunblade.  may as well not be.  99% of the time it's only used as a sword.  characters also get better throughout the game.  snow gets much more tolerable later on, same with hope etc.

Ok, so how do you tell if a weapon is tier 2 or if it's an "ulitma" weapon?  Do I upgrade the weapons I have now or should I save everything I find to upgrade the better weapons once I come across them?

I'm just going to stop upgrading everything for now until I come across some weapons that are clearly better than the ones I've been using.

I hope I haven't been dumping all of my ingredients into shitty weapons and that I'm not gimped now for the rest of the game.

usually the base weapons each character starts with are good enough to upgrade.
but all of them are worth upgrading, because they offer different things.
each weapon starts out tier 1, so basically lvl 1 has for example 10str/10mag and it maxes out at *(lvl 26) at maybe 115str/115mag.  you then use one of the expensive components like scarletite or perovskite etc to change it to tier 2.  this will start at lvl 10, maybe like 64/64 or something.  it makes out at *(lvl 61 i think) and you can transform it into that weapon's version of ultimate weapon with the correct item.

There's too much arbitrary shit going on right now in this game.  I think I screwed up the weapons and perma-fucked myself.  The fuck are these Eidolons?  The game holds your hand in virtually every aspect of the game except for those in which it's actually necessary.  I was in the middle of a rematch with Sazh's Eidolon and I just shut the power off.  So annoying.  This game has its moments, it was fun for a bit, but I've reached my boiling point.  I can't just play through THIRTY hours of mediocrity to get to the alleged good stuff.  I've got it all packed up and I'm going to head to Gamestop to trade it in. Today is the last day of their 50% back on used games promotion.  I think I'll pick up Heavy Rain or something instead.  I won't delete my saved game files, maybe one day I'll try again... but for now.  MEH!

i just beat sazh's eidolon, not sure if i understand what problem your having overall, but upgraded weapons isn't one of them.  i didn't upgrade his weapons at all.  it was a slightly tough battle, but i did it on my first try.  its all in switching your paragrams, and making sure you have been upgrading your powers in the menu.

and just a reminder, remember you don't beat eidolon's you gestate them with the square button.  the quake power is nice to use, use your scope or w/e to see his weak spots, think its magic...so you want to use dual ravengers and the switch over to ravenge medic back and forth.  i didn't even use any potions but thats another option for when things get sticky.

i think i had about 100 seconds left on my doom gauge.  if your running tight then switch all your weapons over to magic and use magic boasting rings.  my characters are upgraded to 2 ring slots now so i assume yours are too.

worst case senerio you just run backwards for a few battles and upgrade once or twice, but you really shouldn't have to.

did you get the healers wand for vinille?  i think it was right before the machine boss which was like the last boss before the edilon i think

i dunno thats about all the tips i can think of

but i must repeat upgrading your weapons is NOT your problem, and even if you used ALL your items your not perma fucked or anything...all those items are small potato's.  later in the game i hear people are buying 200k items...you can buy all the shitty ingredients you have at this point from the shop.  but now is about the time when you want to start looking at item guides on the internet and picking out what weapon you want to upgrade.

Thanks for the tips and everything, but I already traded it in.  It wasn't specifically the difficulty of that battle that turned me off.  It was more about realizing how disinterested and disengaged I was from the experience.  I kept thinking, "ok, now I'm going to get to the cool stuff..." and it just never really happened.  There were some nice moments no doubt, but I never reached a level of involvement or immersion that could come close to games like Mass Effect 2, Gothic I and II, Risen, KoToR, et al.

It was fun to see the new areas, but after a handful of battles the novelty wore off.  Then it was back to the grind.

One of the biggest problems people have with the eidolon battles is that they expect to attack it to fill up its gauge.

Each one yields to a different strategy, Odin's gauge fills faster as you heal people (medic class), Brynhildr yields to the synergist class etc.

I had a friend who couldn't beat Brynhildr because he simply kept attacking and healing and never used synergist.

Yeah, I had Sazh and Vanille set to synergist and medic respectively at the start of the battle.  By the time I was done buffing I noticed the bar filled up a bit.  I went back to attacking and healing after that, erroneously assuming I could finish him off that way, but I died and had to restart.  I think I was seriously just too disinterested to take the battles seriously.  In most cases during battles, I'd just hold the controller in one hand and mash "X" while looking somewhere else, thinking about something else, and I'd still win.

After getting bored of the battles, my only motivation to keep playing was to make it to new locales and to advance the story, but it just wasn't enough to keep me hooked I guess.

k, its official, this game blows.

of all the final fantasy games, you get to the end boss and are wiped out in the first 30 seconds, even when you think that your characters are supreme badasses.

i beat the final boss first try. the end scene is visually awesome though. I doubt i will even try to finish up the other 15 or so quests i have left.

i would say that this is by far the worst FF ever for gameplay. if it werent for the battle system being the only strategic variation this game would be considered an interactive movie rather than a game.

what shit.

I liked this game and don't care about the linearity because I hate those little minigames and shit like that, the only thing that does piss me off is the lack of towns and the annoying voice acting, Sazh is pretty awesome though.

I think the best thing they could of done is put in more minor key music and a darker story line, this is why people liked FF7 so much, which was mostly linear other than those crap minigames that you played maybe 3 or 4 times and the fact you could revisit towns although i never did plus all the annoying running around trying to figure out what the game wants you to do.

All in all the linearity wasn't an issue for me but the game needs a better, less cheesey storyline and more minor key music. Maybe Versus 13 will deliver.

I think that's why FF13 was made the way it was. From what I've heard Squenix was trying to make the game more "western" since people complained about all the running around.

I'm glad that the old battle system from FF7 etc is gone. I hated those fucking random battles, take 3 steps battle, take 3 steps battle etc.

yah i can see how some might not have the time for it i guess, i think the story is pretty good tho, it was what got me through those hours, and once you do then it really starts to feel like a game.  The combat system really starts to make sense because the battles actually get hard, and with the guide the crafting system makes sense.  even gives tips on how to make some quick cash.  The upgrading becomes pretty important.

But im serious once you get to chapter 11 your like holly shit where was this at before, earlier on i thought the monster graphics were pathetic compared to everything else...well chapter 11 changed my mind quick on that.

the bottom line tho is the people getting turned off early in the game are missing out big time because the game you were hoping for is there, its just latter on that you see it.  Then again im still in chapter 11, maybe all the awe wears off fast im not sure

Did I?

I believe I suggested that the reason we have so many games that only take 3 hours to complete is because the lack of attention span most gamers seem to have.

I could care less if someone liked FF13 or not. What I do care about is the fact that the general public, the consumers, create a demand for short shitty games that still cost $60 (MW2,ODST etc). Then when a game that is actually worth its price in game length is released, it gets slammed for taking too long to develop the story or game play etc.

Has anyone else noticed that games on the PS1/2 seemed to be quite a bit longer in gameplay compared to the shit that is released on consoles these days?

The simple fact that most of the complaints that I've heard about FF13, online and from friends in person, is that the game just keeps going on. I mean, would they prefer to play a 1 hour game over and over and over. The truth is, some of my friends actually do that. Its as though they can't handle a changing scenario, they simply want to repeat the same experience over and over. To me that is GADD, Gamer ADD.

They wouldn't say that if they weren't bored.
If the game hooked the player they would never want it to end.

However, the linearity, bad voice acting, mild story telling, bad writing, all wear on people. To the point where finishing it becomes to daunting to deal with.

lol, anyone who hates on MW2 has no clue what they are talking about.

3 hours of gameplay? maybe in the single player mode alone... but then there are about 5 more hours of gameplay on the missions and the 14 days (approx 350 hours) of gameplay i have put in so far on the multiplayer side.

the only people that dont like MW2 are people that suck at it. I have played every single FF, and this one straight up sucks donkey nuts. sure the graphics are great, but it was basically an interactive movie. Choose your own adventure books have more choices and venues of finishing than this game.
look at the history of all the great RPG's: chrono trigger, FF3/7/8/9, legend of Gaia, and wild arms (to name a few) where you were going to get stuck on a part and think that you have tried everything.... FF13 was like "here is what you do and how to do it", there was no thinking outside the box, it was a mindless waste of time.

for fucks sake, i beat the final boss the first try, with ease.

MW2 was just another generic FPS. Bad Company 1&2 were better games overall.

Chrono Trigger and FF3/4/7/9 were great games, better so than FF13.

Eh, I've had enough of arguing over opinions, its getting redundant.

With games like MW2, the emphasis is on the multiplayer component.  The single player campaign is really just a bonus.  But what does worry me a bit is shorter story driven games, especially RPGs.

I don't think the issues people have with FFXIII are necessarily about length, but it's something more like what Thisfire said;

Thisfire said:

You have to take into consideration that some of the most popular games nowadays are games that have potentially infinite length like WoW and other MMOs.

I really like this game.  As almost everyone else has stated, it does get way better in chapter 11.

I don't really mind the linearity.. Sometimes I get pissed in RPGs when there is too much emphasis on choice.  Especially in the leveling process.  This is pretty straight forward and easy to pick up.  I'm no longer up for running through low pixel forests trying to fight T-rex's...

This next gen FF is awesome,  I don't understand all these complaints.  It's not THAT linear.

The only complaint I have is that the towns are missing... I enjoyed the mood of the towns in the old games.

One thing i noticed is that it helps if you turn your radar off, i think if the settings had it off by default the complaints would have been dropped by 1/4th at least.

Which does remind me of something i noticed in chapter 11, anyone else find it odd that the map rotates depending on which direction your pointed when you open it up?  anyway to lock it in place?

yeah, i noticed the rotating map, it started to get to me after a while. i don't think there is a way to lock it in place though.

anyway, i got about 56 hours into it before i had to leave my friend and his PS3. had the option to go back to Cocoon but decided to stay on Pulse and do some more missions and CP and gil farm for a while. sadly, i won't be finishing this game any time soon, and i say sadly because i was starting to quite enjoy it.

overall i'd say it's definitely worth playing, especially once you get to chapter 11. i look forward to resuming my game when i see my friend again in a few months. of course, you'll all be well and done with it by then. if only it could have come out a week earlier.

I played like 8 hours in...idk if I can finish it.  It's like it's been watered down and designed for 10 year olds.  It really is just like a movie where you run around in between. At this point 80% of what I enjoyed about final fantasy is gone.

I want turn based battles back.

I want to control every character.

I don't want dumbass fucking story explanations on the loading screen that spell the character's motivations out for you like you've never read a book in your life or something.

It does look great though.

the reason for the explanations is 1. for when you stop playing the game for a few days and then come back to play it reminds you where you left off.  2. some of the story is a bit vague and the explanations have helped me fill in a few pieces.

Ill give one example, a little girl is show in a video complaining of her leg and a older women asks if it is ok.  but when you go to read about it in the dialogue it gives a little more detail about what happened

but yes i do agree certain things have been watered down for children, but then again i think most of the series has been tailored towards kids somewhat anyway, i mean does anyone remember blitz ball?

as for controlling all the charactors, i do miss that a bit myself, but the system in place really isn't all that bad.  Later on you do get to pick what charactors you control before battle.

Nothing in the game is arbitrary, weapon upgrades don't become important until late in the game. If you are to Sazh's Eidolon and still don't know what they are you're either lying or dumb as hell as they give you in-depth tutorials on them..

Eidolon battles are the easiest in the game so if it's 'annoying' and you reach your boiling point that fast, then the final fantasy series is obviously not for you.

it was a horrible game with great graphics. I have been playing games seriously since atari and owned almost every console with the exception of those that failed miserably like the sega saturn and the dreamcast. not only have i played way, way more games than you, i actually read into everything about the companies. companies that develop games, develop consoles, and even the godfather of 8 bit audio, koji kondo.

plus, i doubt you have played FFonline because you can't beat it, just like any other mmorpg there is no endgame.

another illiterate neanderthal making an opinion and claiming it as fact. First of all, nowhere did I say it was the best final fantasy, it isn't even close. Great assumption there, dipshit. You clearly do not understand game mechanics and rpg storyline structure if you are rating ff9 as one of the best in the series, considering it was made specifically with a child's enjoyment as the main priority. Not surprising you liked that one, you might have actually understood it.:smirk:

FF9 was the weakest in the series until this game came out. at least it had depth and was more than an interactive movie. if any FF is geared towards 1st graders, it was FF13, storyline, hand holding tutorials, everything. it was a useless game and anyone who thinks that it was worth 40 hours of their life leads a very, very sad life.

As far as the draw system, I found it pretty weak myself. I think that the intro scene to FF8 is one of the best in the series, and the actual look of the characters was one of the best as well. As far as the actual storyline and gameplay though, it left much to be desired. Of course, it's pretty hard for any game to follow up FF7.

With that said, the card game in FF8 is my favorite sidegame out of the entire final fantasy series. I probably played more of that card game than the rest of the game itself . I can still remember when I got my Squall and Seifer cards \o/

there's been previous games with summons very similar to these "transformers", i believe the game with blitzball has them.  Altho its a tad different and you don't get a gauge with attacks.  There main function is basically to save your arse in a hard fight.  So i wouldn't exactly call that arbitrary

There are plenty of video games that aren't arbitrary.  Even many fantasy RPG games adhere to a plausible set of natural laws that aren't broken just because the game designer wants to add in a cool looking cyber-turtle with laser eyes that summons robots that fight with nun-chucks or whatever.

But just forget I said anything.  It's not even the point.  I simply just don't like the game.  I have my reasons, I think the entire game world, story, and its characters are ridiculous and laughable and the gameplay is boring and frustrating.

I know you understand what I'm getting at but you are apparently the sort of petty and vindictive person that gets off on making a fool of someone.  If I had more sense I would just ignore you and move on.  But for better or worse, here it goes...

Yes, even in game worlds there are a set of "laws" that the inhabitants adhere to.  In Oblivion for example, the game world is essentially a medieval world with the addition of magic and some fictional creatures.  But everything in the game world for the most part fits together cohesively and there are plausible explanations for the existence of magic and creatures that are in the world.  You won't really witness anything out of place as you wander around.

In FF game worlds (in a lot Japanese RPG game worlds for that matter) it's almost as if the arbitrariness is the only thing that binds the world together.  You might be fighting a group of undead sword wielding soldiers randomly clustered across some random environment, only to have the next battle be with a staff wielding cactus.  There are no possible explanation for the settings and inhabitants other than the game artist and modeler simply thought they looked cool.

For me, while it may look cool or whatever.  It makes the game world difficult to get into.  They take the same approach with the story too, in one scene a character can whoop ass on a large group of enemies, in the next, the character feels threatened and has to run away.  After a while it just becomes totally ridiculous.  The game designers just make shit up and do whatever.  You know... sword wielding characters doing battle with super advanced space ships shooting missiles and lasers.  WTF.  This kind of stuff just simply doesn't do it for me.  It's too ridiculous.

two_rivers said:

I battled Sazh's Eidolon once, while holding the control in one hand, mashing "X" all the while and thinking about something totally unrelated and more interesting in the process.  I knew what tactic I had to apply after I lost once, but I decided it wasn't worth my time and I traded the game in.  I reached my boiling point when I realized how annoying and big of a waste of time the game had become for me to play.  I could have pressed on and beaten the game, but I just could not bring myself to give a fuck.  It has nothing to do with my abilities as a gamer, and more to do with personal taste.  I just don't like the game. Are you that insecure about your feverish love for FFXIII that you can't accept it when somebody doesn't share your opinion?

I'm sure there are plenty of games I enjoy that you don't find interesting, but I'm not going to attempt to belittle you because you don't feel the same way I do.  Either way it's just a video game dude, there's no need to get angry.  Go outside and climb a tree or something, run a few laps, I don't know...  Just because we aren't talking face to face doesn't mean it's ok to be a dickhead.

And here, yes that is a fucking cyber turtle with laser eyes from Final Fantasy.  The truth is I did just make that shit up, but unsurprisingly this creature WAS actually in a FF game.

And if you are going to try to call me out on the staff wielding cactus... here.

Maybe you are right, maybe the series isn't for me anymore despite the fact that I have enjoyed some of the games in the past.  And if that's the case so what!  I can still try 'em out.  At least I played it and give it an honest chance before I decided I didn't like it.  It's not like I was just bashing the game even though I never played it, ya know?

well if you played the previous FF games you should have had an idea that there would be some weirdness like what you've mentioned.  Furthermore, the Eidolon do have a bit of story behind them.  Im still in chapter 11, or maybe 12, but im pretty dammed sure that the Eidolon story line is going to pick up and have some kind of meaning by the end of the game.  As it stands right now there is enough, not much but enough story backing them.  They specifically didn't give much story for a reason at the beginning, as thats kinda how storys go

The charactors get marked by falcith or w/e to carry out orders to destroy the world, the Eidolon's drop in to help set the charactors back on the path of completing their focus.  Which you most likely didn't play long enough to hear that part, but you should have heard before that the legends surrounding the Eidolon's and the guesses as to what they are and what they do.

Anyways this is what grand pulse looked like, sorry you missed it

that would have been totally hot. Vanille already makes the sex noises anyway, they should have gone one step further and made her and Fang dyke it out.

I am actually enjoying myself quite a bit. I do think that the linearity is annoying, but the mechanics, graphics, and storyline make up for it, IMO. My favorite was FFVI(3 in US). I even got to see all of Shadow's dreams, and that shit was annoying.

MY first FF. I have got a PS3 (and I think the playback quality for blu-ray and CD's are fucking terrible when compared to a real BD player). Some of the instances in the game are terribly cheesy. I mean, LOL! But, it seems like typical Japanese animation from what I have experienced in the past. Reminds me a bit of DBZ. Graphics are amazing, and I am starting to get the hang of the battle system.

All in all its a beautiful game. I am about 10 hours into it now, although I do suck a bit, and am to the part where you can upgrade weapons and accessories, which is pretty rad. You don't get much in the way of gill, but then that would just make the game really easy. The paradigm system is rad, as well as the ability to use your aidolon (sp). The crystarium aspect is pretty awesome too. I pretty much like the game a lot. But, what do I know?

I probably need to approach the game with this attitude, of having never played a FF before.  But I have, and it just doesn't compare.  They should have named it "My first RPG," maybe then I would have enjoyed it more.

nothing, misos is obviously retarded.  9/10 people agree ps3's blu ray play does a better job than all but the highest end blu ray players on the market even now.  the playback and also upscaling qualities are pretty amazing thanks to the processing power fo the ps3.  also why the US army is trying to link a bunch of ps3s together to control satellites or some shit i read in an article a while back.

Obviously. Except maybe not. I put in a Shulman CD and it had some major distortions. Popped it into my BD player, and it sounded beautiful.

Popped in a BD, Transformers to be exact because the sound is supposed to be amazing, and the quality was less than impressive. Transferred it to my BD player, and wtf do you know, better, clearer, picture. MAYBE my PS3 is a little fucked up. But MY experience with the playback is not any good.

So, instead of dissing on me, why don't you try to think of other possibilities. I have nearly $7500 wrapped up in my home theater, and I hooked it up myself (Granted this isn't a lot compared to people who can afford the hobby. But, these will blow any Def. Techs and a lot of Paradigms out of the water for a fraction of the price). This is a better system than 95% of the people on this site have ever seen or heard. I don't think that someone who is "retarded" can do this.

My PS3 has shitty playback. That is that.

And there were other people around me when I listened to the Shulman album, and then transferred it, and they agreed that it sounded much better.

see, this is why people shouldn't build their own home theaters unless they really know what they are doing... not just think they know what they are doing because they hooked up 15" subs in the trunk of their car once.

so im guessing you either have a receiver that doesn't read linear pcm well, or you think you have a 7.1 surround system. in both cases, you should switch your audio output to bitstream, and if you are trying to rock true 7.1 surround i would suggest first finding what is called a THX optimizer and then go to your audio settings and change it to support 7.1.
but if you are using the optical out, then it only supports 5.1.

also, the ps3 does not convert up regular dvds (convert up to 1080 and such), it relies on your tv to do that.

Bro. Really? I'm not a fucking idiot. LOL. Let me give you a bit of a break down on what I have going.

42" Panasonic Viera, Axiom 5.1, (http://axiomaudio.com/epic80_500.html#, read reviews on this, and tell me this isn't fucking pro. Mine are all black. These speakers alone will literally rattle pictures off your wall, the sub... Its like having a transducer under your couch. Could YOU imagine paying $1300 for a sub???), Denon 3310CI (http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/4972.asp), APC H15, Cheap Panasonic BD Player, and Custom built PC (which I built) that I use as my media center. Bgears b-enspirer 7.1 audio card hooked up to the Denon via Optical set at 192 PCM. EVERYTHING is HD. Video card, TV, DVD Player, Denon. Everything. Everything, with the exception of the audio connection, is DVI/HDMI. (PC is connected via DVI-HDMI) Most of my electronic music files are VBR or FLAC, or ripped directly from the album in FLAC. The receiver upconverts everything to supposed HD. Which I don't buy, but I am not willing to drop $5k on a DVD player just yet. The receiver is also capable tof playing DOLBY True HD and DTS HD.

The speakers are bi amp-able, so I have 2 separate wires going to each of the 2 fronts, since 7.1 is a total waste of time and receiver power. The only reason why anyone needs 7.1 is if their speakers don't do a good job, and mine are incredible.

My house is NOT built for sound whatsoever. So unfortunately I lose a lot of sound quality in the walls.

Please do not tell me I don't know what I am talking about. And THX is hella over rated. 2 channel stereo is all you need when listening to music. If you can't use just your 2 front's for audio, then there's something wrong. Most audio is recorded in 2 channel stereo. Although some is recorded in 5.1. They do not record music in 7.1. I may be a noob, but I am a rather knowledgeable noob. I did months of research before buying my stereo. Maybe check out some of the HT forums and be learned a bit, if you don't already frequent them.

And your TV cannot up-convert anything. It receives signal and displays it in whatever resolution it is receiving through whichever cable the signal is being carried. I know what I am talking about. I know my shit better than the VAST majority of people, including some "HT specialists". If you see anything wrong, please, give your advice. LOL.

Let me correct myself here so I don't seem like such a dick. From what I know, TVs don't upscale, it s the DVD players job as well as the receivers. I prefer HD sounds over THX. Maybe you do, maybe you don't. The bottom line is, what is good quality to one guy, may not be to the next. Everyone in this hobby knows that HT is entirely subjective.

And as for the sub, most people don't know what a good sub is capable of, like myself before purchasing this system.

I would honestly like your opinion on what is "so wrong" with my post. Seriously. I will put aside my asshole competitive side, as this is a hobby of mine, and hearing other "enthusiasts" points of view is not only interesting, but sometimes helpful.

I thought this game was great. It was my first FF and basically first single player rpg (i've played mmos but thats all).

The story i thought was amazing and filled with feeling..
I loved Vanille..

To be honest thru out the game i rushed it just to see what was going to happen next in the story. The story pretty much grabbed me in as soon as hopes mom dies. which was within the 1st hour or so and all the way thru (50+ hours of story 10+ on missions so far)

I thought it was great as in story.. gameplay however i thought the end boss was WAY to easy..

i thought the chapter 11 old guy boss was the hardest of them all because my characters wernt leveled up but at the end it took maybe 1-2 tries, it was so easy...

the ending, ended so well

all in all story i give a 10 and gameplay i didnt really pay attention to cus i just wanted to know what happened next in the story

BRING THE HATE MOTHER FUCKERS or maybe you agree
