Did I?

I believe I suggested that the reason we have so many games that only take 3 hours to complete is because the lack of attention span most gamers seem to have.

I could care less if someone liked FF13 or not. What I do care about is the fact that the general public, the consumers, create a demand for short shitty games that still cost $60 (MW2,ODST etc). Then when a game that is actually worth its price in game length is released, it gets slammed for taking too long to develop the story or game play etc.

Has anyone else noticed that games on the PS1/2 seemed to be quite a bit longer in gameplay compared to the shit that is released on consoles these days?

The simple fact that most of the complaints that I've heard about FF13, online and from friends in person, is that the game just keeps going on. I mean, would they prefer to play a 1 hour game over and over and over. The truth is, some of my friends actually do that. Its as though they can't handle a changing scenario, they simply want to repeat the same experience over and over. To me that is GADD, Gamer ADD.

They wouldn't say that if they weren't bored.
If the game hooked the player they would never want it to end.

However, the linearity, bad voice acting, mild story telling, bad writing, all wear on people. To the point where finishing it becomes to daunting to deal with.

lol, anyone who hates on MW2 has no clue what they are talking about.

3 hours of gameplay? maybe in the single player mode alone... but then there are about 5 more hours of gameplay on the missions and the 14 days (approx 350 hours) of gameplay i have put in so far on the multiplayer side.

the only people that dont like MW2 are people that suck at it. I have played every single FF, and this one straight up sucks donkey nuts. sure the graphics are great, but it was basically an interactive movie. Choose your own adventure books have more choices and venues of finishing than this game.
look at the history of all the great RPG's: chrono trigger, FF3/7/8/9, legend of Gaia, and wild arms (to name a few) where you were going to get stuck on a part and think that you have tried everything.... FF13 was like "here is what you do and how to do it", there was no thinking outside the box, it was a mindless waste of time.

for fucks sake, i beat the final boss the first try, with ease.

That sums it up very well I think.

MW2 was just another generic FPS. Bad Company 1&2 were better games overall.

Chrono Trigger and FF3/4/7/9 were great games, better so than FF13.

Eh, I've had enough of arguing over opinions, its getting redundant.

With games like MW2, the emphasis is on the multiplayer component.  The single player campaign is really just a bonus.  But what does worry me a bit is shorter story driven games, especially RPGs.

I don't think the issues people have with FFXIII are necessarily about length, but it's something more like what Thisfire said;

Thisfire said:

You have to take into consideration that some of the most popular games nowadays are games that have potentially infinite length like WoW and other MMOs.

I really like this game.  As almost everyone else has stated, it does get way better in chapter 11.

I don't really mind the linearity.. Sometimes I get pissed in RPGs when there is too much emphasis on choice.  Especially in the leveling process.  This is pretty straight forward and easy to pick up.  I'm no longer up for running through low pixel forests trying to fight T-rex's...

This next gen FF is awesome,  I don't understand all these complaints.  It's not THAT linear.

The only complaint I have is that the towns are missing... I enjoyed the mood of the towns in the old games.

One thing i noticed is that it helps if you turn your radar off, i think if the settings had it off by default the complaints would have been dropped by 1/4th at least.

Which does remind me of something i noticed in chapter 11, anyone else find it odd that the map rotates depending on which direction your pointed when you open it up?  anyway to lock it in place?

yeah, i noticed the rotating map, it started to get to me after a while. i don't think there is a way to lock it in place though.

anyway, i got about 56 hours into it before i had to leave my friend and his PS3. had the option to go back to Cocoon but decided to stay on Pulse and do some more missions and CP and gil farm for a while. sadly, i won't be finishing this game any time soon, and i say sadly because i was starting to quite enjoy it.

overall i'd say it's definitely worth playing, especially once you get to chapter 11. i look forward to resuming my game when i see my friend again in a few months. of course, you'll all be well and done with it by then. if only it could have come out a week earlier.

just now at chapter eleven myself and despite so many negative reviews i find the game to be pretty fun. the voice overs are pretty shitty, but other then that i find it a fun game overall. i've read that verses will be a lot more like a traditional FF without the linearity.

yah i had a feeling all along that versus was going to be the better game. i think they even named it that way to hint at it.  think it was kinda a slap at microsoft, used them to rake in the money to make the exclusive

At first I was disappointed at how incredibly linear the storyline was, until I found out it was just an exaggerated introduction to gameplay and character development. One of my favorite final fantasy's so far, heading into chapter 13 now

how? did you ever play any final fantasy game before this?

this was seriously the lamest, and worse final fantasy ever. I don't think you would have made the above statement if you had ever played FF3, 7, 8, 9 and tactics, or even FFonline.

i didn't really care for 8 either. i mean, i played it, a couple of times even, but i also thought it kind of sucked.

I played like 8 hours in...idk if I can finish it.  It's like it's been watered down and designed for 10 year olds.  It really is just like a movie where you run around in between. At this point 80% of what I enjoyed about final fantasy is gone.

I want turn based battles back.

I want to control every character.

I don't want dumbass fucking story explanations on the loading screen that spell the character's motivations out for you like you've never read a book in your life or something.

It does look great though.

Re: FFXIII first impressions... [Re: g00ru]
    #12307235 -

the reason for the explanations is 1. for when you stop playing the game for a few days and then come back to play it reminds you where you left off.  2. some of the story is a bit vague and the explanations have helped me fill in a few pieces.

Ill give one example, a little girl is show in a video complaining of her leg and a older women asks if it is ok.  but when you go to read about it in the dialogue it gives a little more detail about what happened

but yes i do agree certain things have been watered down for children, but then again i think most of the series has been tailored towards kids somewhat anyway, i mean does anyone remember blitz ball?

as for controlling all the charactors, i do miss that a bit myself, but the system in place really isn't all that bad.  Later on you do get to pick what charactors you control before battle.
