Planting San Pedro seeds + pics
    #1216403 - 01/14/03 03:04 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I just stopped juggling the sand, to take che best of it, as a shroomerite suggested.
Here are the pods - 3 from clay and 3 plastic. Also on the pic there is peat, which I was told to mix (1/3) with 2/3 of the good sand. But I forgot, and actually the peat is quite wet so I decided to use only sand.

2 Pics of how I made only the good sand stay  It was exhausting but worth the effort

Sand was enought to fill 3 pods, and now please tell me how much seeds to plant in each pod ? I think of planting all 30.

Does setup looks good ? This is my first time looking for serious cacti grow. Peace and pleasure my people !

You need some soil to mix in with the sand.

Seeds can be planted 1 Inch apart.

yes and no..

for normal plants that have low germination rates, i soak and scar and then put in damp sand in my refrigerator, and i can normally get better germinatino rates...

For cactii it's kinda different, you have to be prepared to leave your seedlings in whatever you planted the seeds in for atleast a year, this means you're gonna want some soil mixed in with that sand.

I think seeds sprout a little better in a slightly acidic enviroment, but it will work without the peat too. I agree with the adding soil part too.
Als antwoord op:

I would place all of them seeds in the larger pot, then transplant after they become too big. (after a year or so, depents on the species and grow conditions)I've found that those cacti-babies like to be close to each other when they're smal and sensitive.
Als antwoord op:

I would add some larger pieces of stone and some coarser grond on the bottom of the pot for good drainage when wattering.
My prefered method is pooring some cooking water on the pots with soil, to kill insects, plant seeds, fungi spores,... Placing the pot in a large ziplockbaggie. Letting the pot cool to roomtemperature, pooring the excess water that dripped out the pot out of the baggie, sprinkling the seeds on top of the soil, If available you can also add some fungicide but that will sometimes slow the growth of your seedlings a little bit, close the ziplock baggie, and keep it at a temp. around 27?C for Trichocerei or 32?C for Lophophori. Watch the humidity, you don't want water standing on the bottom of the bag, just smal droplets on the sides. Seedlings should sprout within 2-3 weeks.
After 1-2 months slowly let them get accustomed to fresh air by opening the bag a little bit more every few days. Don' t give them much direct sunlight as they will get sunburned quickly.
Anyway, this is how I do it (and with succes), but that doesn't mean there are other (and better) ways to do it.
Good luck!!!
btw, wich species are you going to grow?

Yea you will need some soil in there  For every three cups of your sand add one cup soil.....
I've found these cacti really arent that hard to germinate...after you add your soil, just lay your seeds on top of the soil and barely cover them(1cm or so)...add some bottom heat....cover with some clear plastic and your should be good to go.....

Funkey : 5 shrooms for you, thanks for sharing. Ill have in mind to put larger pieces of stone and coarser grond  on the bottom of  the pot, and I will plant them all in the big one. This way I can choose to take the 'big' sand ( the larger pieces I mean ), the medium one or the small one which should I choose ? Oh and I should put little pieces of soil not big peaces of peat right ? Thank you all for teaching me.

Put large rocks in the bottom to help drainage.

Then a layer of medium sand with peat..

&  on top use fine sand and fine peat mix (1/2 Inch Or 1.5 cm deapth)and fine peat (small one). This helps the roots.

good luck

Anyway, I totally agree with SalviaEngland about the sand and soil-thing.

okay thats what I will do.Now I have a final question where to put them. First option is in my room, behind the window ( actually they are 2 windows ) if put there the sun will shine them 3 - 4 hours probably, and now its winter, and I think they wont recieve the needed light. On the other hand the temperature will be good. Other option is in the living room I will place them behind a window this way theyll recieve about 8 hours indirect winter sunlight  but there is a more cold. Also do I need to put them near my lamps in my room ? if yes how much ? peace

You don't want direct sun light when they are young. They will need plenty of heat. If they are kept in a cold room they won't germinate.

If the lamp keeps them warm then, yes.

Although they don't want direct sunlight, they do want as much indirect light as you can provide. My cacti seedlings get some sunlight through a while plastic bag which prevents them burning.

I meant to be near light to get additional light they need. Cause in my room they get 3 hours indirect sunlight, is that enought ? I will also put them in plastic bag

Yes you can use a lamp to add some more light..

Try and get as much light as possable without giving them direct light and keep them warm.

The white bag is used to shade sun light.....

wet the mix down so it is thoroughly moist, but not wet. Place your seeds in about an inch a part, place saran wrap or some covering over the top of the pots. Add some bottom heat on a cycle of like 16/14. Sit and be patient

If you room is not hot enough (like a desert) you need to add some extra heating like a heating pad. The tray I use has a built in heater (available from a garden centre). Your lamp may provide a good source of heat, but most people say heat from the bottom is better. In the past I have used a computer monitor to provide extra heat. If your room is hot you may not need the extra heating!

Seedlings do better when the humidity is raised this can be achieved by placing clear plastic over the pot.

Your soil looks good

I assume you don't have a heating pad, so I think the lamp is your best bet. Shine it on the bag where the pot is in, and adjust the position untill you reach the proper temperature (around 27?C in the daytime for trichocerei, around 32?C for Lophophori). Leave it on for 12-16 hours a day. After the seedlings have sprouted (2-3 weeks) you can place them at roomtemperature near a window without additional lightning, but don't make the changing in climate too drastic.

that' basically saran wrap (it's thin clear plastic sheet that klings together and can get annoying, but works well as a covering, used to cover over food and stuff)..

sorry about that, forgot that you might not be familiar with that due to language.

The lamp could work, but keep in mind that if you are going to cover that plastic bin(which you should!) with saran wrap, temperatures will probably get too high. So try to place the lamp a bit further away from the bin and see if you can get the right temperatures.

As far as I know I think it will work, but it's kinda hard for me to say, cause I've never tried a setup like that. The small pot with the saran wrap looks OK.

I wish you the best of luck.

The soil should always be moist (not soaky wet!). You can add water by placing the pot's bottoms in a layer of water for a little while. The water will suck it's way up.
