trip to costa rica
    #12127410 - 03/02/10 12:24 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hello i am leaving for costa rica tomorrow and plan to be doing a little hunting. I am pretty confident in my identification skills however i still am feeling worry some due to the new region i will be looking for mushrooms in. Totally new environment and new species in which i am not used to. I figured i should narrow it down to just cubes because these seem to be the easiest to ID. Would you guys recommend any things to keep in mind or tips? Also when eating a specimen that you harvested what is the best tactic to test if the specimens are not poisonous by eating them? I have heard eat a small piece and wait 24 hours. I Will be identifying them as best as [possible without a microscope for spore ID however i would still like a fall back method/ safety tactic. All ideas welcome please. Thank you very mush =]]

p.s. Is there anything in particular that any who has been there  really enjoyed to check out in Costa Rica as far as scenery goes or things to do?

No.  You should look for all mushrooms.  Especially Panaeolus cyanescens and Panaeolus sp.

Cubes are real boring.

Take nice clear pictures of all the mushrooms you can find, and post them on http://mushroomobserver.org and also the hunting forum here.

you are gong to be just fine. Just sitck with Cube and cope, definately those are what your are gonna find often, specially cyanescens.

here (in CR) is not yet exactly the best time to go hunting, because there wasnt much rain these days, but still, there are good chances to have a nice hunting.

The things with CUBEs here, is that they are not "strong". I dont know why, but I have to eat 10  fresh units (mid and big) to get some mid-level trip. If you thing this amount in grams, they could be good like 10 g ,dry, and of course , that's got give you a really high trip, but it doesnt go that way, dont know why.

i could tellyou  some tips or spots if you wanna go trip in mountains.

well i will be  in the town near Arenal and then will be heading to the Carribean side (caheita. I will keep in mind the Panaeolus strain as well =]. But what is a safe test by eating them in small amounts to confirm they are not poisonous without posting pics online because i most likely wont have access to the internet?

There is no safe test.

Just identify them properly.

Several rare Psilocybe and Gymnopilus species occur in Costa Rica.
Take sporeprints and keep a dried fruitbody of anything especially interesting.
Good luck.
