Redirecting funds from space to earth's desert

It's nice to learn about Mars and the moon, etc. It's very educational to learn new facts about space. But perhaps, in light of the current economic situation, we should redirect money which is being used on exploring outer space into programs which explore the possibility of making the deserts of earth more inhabitable. Even the real estate companies and such can get in on this action. Instead of tearing down forests, we could build up previously uninhabited desert land. All of this land is unused and wasted. Let's use it.
Am I just high, or is this a good idea?

Or we could just stop feeding poor people and nail 3 or 4 birds with one stone.

Deserts are just as important as forests. Other creatures and plants have made homes in them.
Besides, there'd be no more cacti.
We should just send our prisoners into space we plan to execute and if they die, who cares right? If they live we still kill them and don't have to pay them. It's a win-win.
-------------------- Dr says to stop trying to treat the side-effects of big government and focus on the core issues. End the Federal Reserve/audit the gold reserves at Fort Knox, abolish the IRS, end all wars and occupancies, stop the building of an empire that will inevitably fail, and cut all unconstitutional federal programs. Put the power back in the peoples' hands by ending this nanny-state.

in one way i think its a good idea because i really like deserts and the idea of living inone. but at the same time, deserts are usually quite far away from resources so it would be a hassle to try and transport all the goods there maybe. i also wouldnt want to cover all the deserts with a bunch of homes and structures because deserts are pretty to look at when they have nothing inhabiting them.

Well yeah, but I'm saying that perhaps we should focus on ways to make American deserts more inhabitable.

i understand. the place i grew up was built upon a desert and it was a great place to live so i think the technology and all that stuff has already been created to inhabit deserts. major deserts like the mojave are somewhat populated but leaving most of them blank is a better idea i think. las vegas survives well enough. we could build on prairies or grasslands and it would be just as good as building in a desert but better.
