How cold is too cold?
    #1214714 - 01/13/03 02:42 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

My house is fucking freezing, it'd 59.4 degrees right now.
"The appropriate fruiting temperatures for P. cubensis are 74 -78 ?F but temperatures as cold as 68 should work out. "

Anyone have any ideas on what measures I can take to birth a cake in this environment?

you live in an igloo?
lol.you have over 4000 posts, how could you not know the answer to this being around for that long? (i'm not talking junk, i'm just confused)

you should just build an incubating chamber, or put a space heater powered by the windmill outside of the igloo. j/k with ya.

If you have them in an enclosure, you can add an aquarium heater and wrap your container with a blanket, search around for heating methods. There was someone who had one using two containers on top of each other, and a submergible aquarium heater in water. I am very new at growing as you can probably tell, good luck!

well your could horten thing sup and sit on it =) you could talk to it all day, warming it with your breath.... erm seriously though, i'm using a large thich opaque rubbermaid container with a heating pad in the bottom and then shirts and blanket son top of that and then lighter duy, smaller rubbermaids on top of that painted black on the sides and bottoms. keep the lid on for 12 hours and i put a light on them for the other 12. the black paint absorbs the light and turns it to heat so the things sty warm when the lid is off. it's working great.

I live with parents that are stingy with the air... plus I have a steath set-up that just doesn't have room for an aquarium-style heating...
Space heating is an issue, my family is real fucked up about wasting electricity (my father is an electrical engineer)

Covering it with blankets and putting a heating pad in it might work... I dunno, I'd kinda like to come home everyday not wondering if my house has been leveled to a crisp...

I was hoping someone might suggest a chemical reaction technique, or perhaps a solar powered heating method... If all other methods exhaust me, I could refill a resevoir with hot water several times a day...

Bear with me, I'm looking for an easier way out that that.

I might have a simple solution for you....you would have to try.

Make a large incubator with a submersible aquarium heater in the bottom.
Then you could put a fruiting chamber on top of the incubator....and the heat rising up from the incubator might give off heat for your fruiting chamber.

Or you could make a double bin rubbermaid incubator and use it for a fruiting chamber...you would dial in the temp inside the top bin to be 74 degrees F.

Something like this.

Then cut a large portion of the top out...and put plexi glass on the top.

just an idea!
good luck!

I am currently using a reptile heat rock for an incubator and it is quite good I must say. Much more stealthy than an aqarium heater but not as customizable.

Maybe I always thought that an aquarium heater wouldn't work becuase I've never seen ones that just submerge under water like that...
All the ones I've seen/all the ones I have have to be mounted vertically, and part of it has to be out of the water (where you adjust the temp) ... But I'm sure I might be able to make a discrete incubator... now that I don't have to factor in a 12 inches of water!
Pray tell, where would I find such a thing? I'll try on e-bay, who knows?

get a fully submersible aquarium heater...some are not fully submersible bro!

you can pick them up in a Pet Store, Tropical fish store, Walmart...etc.

they do have them on Ebay too.

good luck!

could you tell me exactly how you have your incubator set up with a heat rock. i mean, i can imagine how you have it, but i'd like to know exactly from someone who already has a working model.

thanks.

When picking out a submersible aquarium heater, shell out the extra couple of bucks and pick up one with remote (corded) temperature control. You can then stick the probe from one of those digital outdoor thermometers inside the chamber (along with the probe from the heater itself) and get an accurate reading of the temperature inside the chamber (instead of having to guess at the heat dissipation). This way, you never have to get your hands in the water... so you can make a nice, strong bleach/water solution to keep things from growing in the water. Mine consistently ranges between 84 and 85 degrees.

Ps. Of course, you could always go with passive solar heating, but that would be somewhat more obvious than the fish tank heater idea (with the need for solar panels, copper tubing, etc).

Pps. I don't like the idea of using a heat rock, heating pad, or any other method that doesn't involve some kind of temperature control.
