what is it (what is happening) when I have rhizomorphic growth?
    #12138672 - 03/03/10 10:43 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, I just want to know what is going on here.  Maybe someone could direct me to a link.  I have a simplistic (most likely wrong) reason for the rhizomorphic growth, but would like to hear someone who has a bit more confidence than me.

Rizomorphic myc. is good.  It means that two monokaryotic spores combined to make one dikaryotic organisim.  Cubes cant make fruit unitl they do so.

I know it's good.  Everyone is out to isolate it.  What makes it happens though?  What is going on in the micro world to cause this root-like formation?

Before, I thought of it as there being + and - gamets/spores and the fusion of + and - gametes produces the rhizomorphic business we all seek.

According to a recent article, fungi have a shit ton of sexes, so I don't know if my previous belief is entirely correct.

Is it something defined by the conditions it is in?  People talk of occasions where this rooty pattern disappears after 3 or more passes/transfers and reverts back to the cottony fluff pattern.

....  So this reminds me.  I had a petri dish with some fuzzy nonsense on it and was about to throw it away.  But before I did, I dicked around with the fuzz, pushing it down.  When I did this, to my delight, a beautiful rhizomorphic pattern was revealed on the agar.  Perhaps, this fuzziness is the mycelium extending upward for air exchange and superficially hides the rhizomorphic pattern.  Just a thought.  I threw away a perfectly good looking petri dish, but now I know.

that's what I thought, but is it any type of monokaryotic spore?

Some mushrooms do not require two spores.  Cubensis requires two spores.  A male gamete and a female gamete.  They fuse together via clamp connections.  Once this happens they share their genetic info.
Two dikyarotic strains can also fuse together creating a mushroom that has both attributes.  Too tired to go any further.  I highly reccomend all of the books by Paul Stamets.  Theyre amazing.  Its what you need for questions like this.

...It is not just any type of monokaryotic spores that have mated.

Rhizomorphic mycelium is largely genetic.  Some of the spore's DNA is programmed to be cottony and some is programmed to be ropy.  It is hypothesized or found that the ropy rhizomorphic mycelium produces better fruits and is almost guaranteed to have the capacity to produce fruits.  Amongst other things.  Some of the cottony mycelium may not ever produce fruits at all.
