Does anyone have some insight into vision quests? I know very little about the subject yet I do know the basics (basics: what/how). If anyone has any idea of what is involved in a vision quest and/or have any personal experience you would like to share (I know vision quests are very private and I would not wish anyone to share anything they are not comfortable) please post a reply. Thank you.

I know very little but here it is: A vision quest is a solitary vigil by a mature Native American boy to seek spiritual power and learn through a vision the identity of his usually animal or bird guardian spirit. It is a rite and ritual to accompany the maturing of a Native American boy. Thats all I know, hope it helps.

Thank for the response. I know that a vision quest requires a great deal of fasting as well as meditation. I have been trying to acquire some more information on varies web sites however I have been unsuccessful.

Yes, natives and shamans ingested psychedelics all the time to induce vision quests. This of course could have got muddled up with our current society morals. But originally they used mainly psycedelic plants. That is just part of it, like there is different reasons why they did it, and one of the reasons is to find your power animal.

The only problem with the use of mind-altering drugs to induce a vision quest is that there is no way of knowing the "truth" of the experience. A vision quest is suppose to be induced due to direct sacrifice of the indevidual, meaning that it can take days of starvation, meditation and physical efforts. If taking 5grams of mushrooms or any other plant can induce the vision quest but it may not be the same as if you had undergone three days alone in the woods with out food or shelter. I know that it sounds "better" to just take the drug but sometimes it is not the vision which makes the experience intense and meaningfull but the sacrifice you had to do to achieve it. The use of mind-altering drugs is a very delicate topic since it is easy to missuse drugs. When I use it I am carefull to ensure that I am ready for the expirence.

i would say that there is no way to know the truth of any experience. experience does not reveal truth. experience is purely for the sake of experience. it may be existentially valuable but truth is in the realm of revelation from god. experience and revelation may sometimes come together but they are not the same thing. are you seeking experience? or revelation? if you are seeking truth, seek revelation.

Well i think you should fast, and meditate yadayadayada.....then when your body is weak and suseptable do a mega dose! Then you will certainly have a vision, but its value wont be diminished. I bet the trip would be really intense too....much more so than normal.

Yes drugs are tools which are often misused. I can think of numerous examples of people abusing the powers of the spiritual plants. I guess those with respect for the plant, or fungi as the case may be, need to teach their power openly. When I say teach I mean the 'good and bad' of the experience. The problem with that is that all drugs are illegal.

Well WaveRider, I have a little bit of insight into Vision Quests even though I have not gone on one myself. In my opinion there is much more to a Vision Quest then just taking drugs or sort of artificially inducing a vision. I definitely believe that certain spiritual plants can aid in a Vision Quest, however they should not be the core component. From what I have read a Vision Quest is about coming in touch with one's soul.
Here was some information I found on an institute's site that actually leads and guides personal and group Vision Quests, I bet if you emailed them you could get a great deal of information. However in reference to the search for the soul in a Vision Quest or a spiritual animal, here is an excerpt taken from the institute's site " In Jungian psychology, the Anima is the Inner Woman in a man; the Animus, the Inner Man in a woman. The Anima and Animus refer to the mysterious energies within our psyches that guide us on the inward journey to soul." Here is the link to their webpage: http://www.animas.org

I will take a look at the website and see what I can find out. By the way, you are the first person who understood what I meant to say by vision quest. Everyone else just assumes that the spirit plants can show you all you need to know. So I would like to say that I agree with you, though spirit plants are helpful they areonly meant to aid the quest not be the quest. Anyway I will see the website and place another post about what I found out. Thank you again.

Hello BlueLemming,
Thank you for the web link. I checked it out and it does have some usefull information however I question the validity of some of the information since the authors of the site are vague. The site is mostly an advertisement for their retreat which is very very expensive consedering you don't really eat and stay in the outdoors for most of your experience. I find it odd that the organizers would charge so much money for a spiritual expirience and, personnally, I would not pay the price they are asking (appr. USD$ 300.00 for the 'basic' package) for spiritual guidance. I mean the Bhuddist monks don't place a downpayment on their ten year stay at the monasteries, a priest doesn't get charged for his training, so I don't see why the charge. Unless of course their were large expenses to the training but this is not the case since a vision quest consists mainly of being in the wild without shelter or food for a period of time (usually 3-7 days) hence no expense is incured by the 'owners.' Thus I am inclined to believe that the intent of the author of the site is to have large finencial gain rather then the spread of knowledge and spiritual guidance. Well I thank you once again for replying to my post.
