Mr Rogers and Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs) were very close. Coombs got his start as an understudy to Rogers on his show.
Neither show was focussed on things like reading and writing or basic education. Most shows like that, I think you'll notice are alot more commercial/merchandising oriented, and only have a superficial approach to education. Though I do think Seseme street used to be good. Now it's pretty brainless. Ever watch Dora or Diego? that's educational?

You're doing it wrong.
He speaks meticulously and considerably below average brain clockspeed. His words come off as carefully chosen instead of spontaneous. It comes off as artificial, especially since the words he speaks are of the heart, which should flow smoothly.
Many good people have something off-putting about them and many bad people are quite charismatic.
You worship the man but take it from a foreigner versed in the English language who only saw him first today: He comes off as creepy, because of how he says what he says.
Many priests have this unsettling effect too.
Its not disrespect, or insecurity, its observation.

Perhaps It is a grim social commentary in itself, But perhaps society should be scruitinized better by our better selves.
Hate and intolerance are symptoms of an epidemic lack of social and emotional education. We see young people entering adulthood so ill-equipped for establishing meaningful societies, That they take the easiest routes, Forming societies along granted, or steriotypical lines, defined only by what sets them apart, and unified by dislike for the unlike. This creates rifts in society that only fosters greater rifts. People alienate and isolate themseves from the greater part of society, and believe it is society that isolates and alienates them.
People judge others and themselves by their outward social or cultural denomination, even rewarding discordance by affirmation of status. Left by the wayside is this thing we used to call "content of character"
Fred Rogers Diddn't want for us to grow up trapped by these trends that had trapped his generation and those before him. He wanted better for us. He had faith in us. And some of us demonstrate the same distrust of differences, the same affirmation of the projection of our insecurities upon others, unto him. Proving the point.
If you think hes creepy, you're expressing the nature of those same frustrated fears he worked to help so many overcome. Yes he talks different, he looks you right in the eye, frankly, I would feel afraid in his presence too, The difference is that I know, without prejudice or transferance, that the unease I'm really feeling, is unworthiness. Envy, the root of narssisism. The effect is usually the devalument of others.
If you think perhaps Mr. Rogers is some sort of preditor because of his unrestrained candidness, Then you demonstrate another insecurity, Not merely self-alienation, but the granted social understanding (see delusion) That intimacy of thought is unnacceptable. That everyone of fit mind should express a guardedness and conformity of behavior.
But that's not who we are. That's just who we pretend to be at the cost of our potentials and to the detriment of our character.
Just stop and think for a second, what if we could really be ourselves? If we had people who built us up and let us grow into healthy, and free-minded people. All the talk you hear of humanity awakening to a higher-plane of consiousness, It's not magic, but funny thing, it has become mystified.
Go out into your neighborhood and shake your neighbors hand, tell them you appreciate them, offer goodwill. What do you think they will think of you? Is that right? Should we just accept that?
Do happy, friendly neighbors only exist in rich neighborhoods? Gated neighborhoods? Frustration and envy. We are a society of narssisists obsessed with the material and how it distracts us from ourselves.
Mr. Rogers wanted us to pay better attention to ourselves and be okay with that. Maybe he just had too much faith in us, just look at us.
QFT
Also where would someone get the "assumption" that just because he speaks slowly makes him creepy^ Thats just societies assumption. Heres an opinion unbiased by societies restraints. "He speaks slow because thats how he speaks."

Nope. He was a Presbyterian minister, a goodie-two-shoes, and a stand-up guy. That's why people make these rumors about him: They just can't fathom that someone could be so upstanding and virtuous.

Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street were my favorite 2 shows when I was a kid for a long time. I think Mr. Rogers was my favorite out of the two by far. then the evil Barney came along when my brother was growing up. EVIL.
