paranoia and a photo!
    #1211153 - 01/12/03 04:21 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I have just harvested what I decided was the last flush from my cake. This was the fourth flush, and I think I see the beginnings of cobweb mold on a little spot in the cake (which no mushrooms sprouted close to). Anyway, these last three mushrooms have me a tad concerned. They came off the cake a bit too easily, though this may be because they seemed to almost be growing out of the vermiculite at the bottom rather than the main body of the cake itself. They also look a bit different from the earlier mushrooms I picked from this cake, though that may be because I allowed them to become more mature.

This picture is of the first flush shortly before harvest:

This picture is of one of the new mushrooms, which I'm spore printing:

I'm concerned about that dark band along the edges, and one of the other mushrooms has a sort of notch in its cap. Are these things safe to munch on, or is this some kind of super devil contam? Is there some litmus test to know for sure?

looks good to me, too. they look healthy, and if you only THINK you have a contam, you're fine. no smell / green?

that cap is probably just showing the wrinkles of an old man. if you're really concerned, check in the contam forum, and i'll check back here to see what everyone else reckons.

It looks to me as if the cap has turned upwards. It was probably dropping (or getting ready to) drop spores.

The cap has turned upwards. I think they're fine, they seemed so at the time, which is why they're drying now. No green, or smell, or anything like that.

A good rule of thumb is to chuck ANY cakes on which you find contamination, the minute you discover it, if not sooner (huh?). You heard me. Even if there are shroomies growing on it, and they're purdy too. Chuck, chuck, what the fuck..It's for your own good. Those guys are connected to the cake which has contamination, therefore assume they are contaminated. Contamination happens sometimes even if you are careful, and more often if you are not. People have gotten very ill after having consumed something that originated from contaminated sources. Better safe than sorry.

i just realised that the two pictures aren't directly connected.
although the voting is currently at 4:1 in favour, i'm gonna switch sides and go with sherman. now it's 3:2

I went ahead and chucked the cake and the last batch of shrooms out a window into the snow. I now think it was definetly right to do so, because I went out and looked at them earlier, and despite being manhandled and frozen they didn't turn substantially blue.

Here's a question, though - I still have this sporeprint I took. Is it safe, or do I need to get rid of it?

in my experience, contaminated spore prints resulted to a majority of contaminated jars and an exception of few healthy ones. So, yeap, you can keep it and give a shot. If you are an amateur, then you can toss it away and buy/win/trade another print, to be sure that you will have plenty of healthy jars. i hope i was somehow helpful
