Definitely not chanterelles.

Those look like Clitocybes to me, and similar to Clitocybe maxima. Although listed in some guides as edible, I wouldn't recommend eating them.

A spore print would help confirm this ID - C. maxima has a white spore print. If the spore print has a tint of color (watch for pink-buff) then it's another species.

If you find chanterelles, they won't have gills like your specimens do. Instead, there will be blunt, gill-like folds on the underside of the cap which will branch and intervein extensively. Also, they will be bright yellow, like egg yolks. There are also white chanterelles, which are like regular chanterelles, but without the bright yellow color. Finally, chanterelles almost always have a distinct fruit-like (apricot) smell.

I agree with Toxic.

Yeah, chantrelles are usually really bright and beautiful. They are also meaty as hell!

bummer.....although, i tried to find some pix of the maxima, . the pix i found look like the maxima was alot thinner in the cap, and have a brownish stock. thgese have a light cream to white stock. DAMN!....... i found like 10-15 pounds of these. they sure smell shroomy!!.......nothin beats the clean ass smell of a mushroom.......im at my pictue limit for today, but ill take some more pix toxicman, and post them in the am tomarrow. ill also cut one of the big ones cross section and take a closeup picture of it, and work on getting a sporeprint this pm....these are really fat and meaty......if i can get a spore print, ill post a pictue of that too. thanks guys, and hopefully someone else will take a look and have some ideas too. i bet MJ knows what they are...ill send him the link.

Wow.

Did you notice any symptoms? The dangerous Clitocybes contain muscarine. Fatalities (at least in humans) due to muscarine poisoning are rare.

A lack of symptoms makes me wonder if it really was the mushroom. Muscarine poisoning has a rapid onset (5 - 30 minutes) and the victim typically shows strong sweating, salivation, tearing of the eyes, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea (usually accompanied by colicky abdominal pain).

Dr. Benjamin states that he is unaware of any fatalities in the US (ever) and only a few in Europe.

So I hope you can see why I say I'm pretty surprised to hear that there was a death due to these mushrooms. If it truly was the mushroom, then those pigs must be very sensitive to muscarine.

it looked like the pig slobbered all over the inside of the pighouse, but i didnt really think to much about that......could have been other stuff i didnt notice to.......

im almost tempted to go out in my little patch of woods and get another one and feed it to another one of the pigs just to make sure..........
