I'm listening to swinging version by Ella right now, but I'm also a sucker for the Darin and Armstrong versions...
Mack The Knife Brecht, Weill, Blitzstein
Oh the shark has pretty teeth, dear And he shows them pearly white Just a jack knife has old MacHeath, dear And he keeps it out of sight
You know when the shark bites with his teeth, dear Scarlet billows start to spread Fancy gloves though wears MacHeath, dear So there's never, never a trace of red
On the sidewalk, Sunday morning, Don't you know Lies a body oozing life Someone's sneaking round the corner Could that be our boy, Mack the knife?
From a tug boat by the river There's a cement bag just dropping on down The cement's just for the weight, dear Bet you Mack is back in town
Did you hear about Louie Miller he disappeared After drawing out all his hard earned cash And MacHeath spends like a sailor Could it be our boy did something rash?
Jenny Diver, Sukey Tawdr Look out Miss Lotte Lenya, and old Lucy Brown Oh the line forms on the right, babe Now that Mack is back in town
I said Jenny Diver, Sukey Tawdr Look out Miss Lotte Lenya, and old Lucy Brown Oh the line forms on the right, babe Now that Mack is back in town

The Shadow Of Your Smile Webster and Mandel
The shadow of your smile when you have gone Will color all my dreams and light the dawn Look into my eyes, my love, and see All the lovely things you are to me
Our wistful little star, it was far too high A teardrop kissed your lips and so, so did I Now when I remember Spring and every little lovely thing I will be remembering the shadow of your smile
Your lovely smile

I switched over to the local college stations nightly jazz programming and heard an instrumental version of this song. God, that was a great movie, but then so was, The Lost Weekend (which was even a better book!)...
The Days of Wine and Roses Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer
The days of wine and roses, Laugh and run away, Like a child at play, Through a meadowland, Toward a closing door, A door marked never more, That wasn?t there before. The lonely night discloses, Just a passing breeze, Filled with memories, Of the golden smile, That introduced me to, The days of wine and roses, And you! The lonely night discloses, Just a passing breeze, Filled with memories, Of the golden smile, That introduced me to, The days of wine and roses, And you!

/ me hears mariachi static on the raidio, and the tubes they glow in the dark... / me thinks I'm with there with her in Ensenada, and I'm I'm here in Echo park...
Carmelita, hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town
Well I pawned my Smith and Wesson And I went to meet my man He hangs out down on Alvarado Street At the Pioneer Chicken stand
Carmelita, hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town
Well I'm sittin' here playing solitaire With my pearl handled deck The county won't give me no more methadone And they cut off your welfare check
Carmelita, hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town

I like "Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darrin, and I have it on cd.
I just can't believe such a fucking violent song was sung so long ago, and in such a nonchalont(sp) mannor.

Hey LF, I just noticed, that's the "dead baby" beatles' album cover! I had a chance to buy one back in the eighties, but it was several hundred dollars. Now I wish I had...
I just got back from an aborted WalMart trip -- they were closed. So I was driving the rain-soaked, late night, highway back from town, and the fog was like thick and heavy white, and I'm listing to Miles Davis' version of "My Funny Valentine" -- one word, "wicked!" -- and it got me thinking about past loves, and I have come to the conclusion that chicks that know their jazz are definitely deeper and more soulful, This has been my experience, anyway...

Yeah, I know. I remember looking at one in Recycled Record in Palo Alto, California, in about 1979, when I was just a goofy teenager. It was several hundred dollars at the time, and that was just more than I was prepared to spend for a record. I wish I had bought it now...
I do have an American promotional copy of Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn," on the original English record label!

Unless your a hardcore record collector, I wouldn't worry about buying that record. Forget about material possessions. They'll just weigh you down.
I remember you mentioning your "PATGOD" record though. That's hella cool!
