Guitar players; how thick is the plectrum you use?
    #12122648 - 03/01/10 06:51 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Do you use different ones for different styles?

I use a 3mm one but sometimes,it can feel a bit clunky...

 I've always said plectrum even though pick is easier.

Ya,with chords,a thick 'pick' makes it harder to get a nice rhythm and I've a tendancy to hit the tring hard but a nice thick pick is nicer for lead playing.

Like for precise picking, thin ones are a balls, flopping all over the shop.

I have this one pick that is my favorite of all time.  It's pretty thick but bends ever so slightly when you dig in with it. Had it for like 2 years now.

dunlop tortex picks.  have been using them for years and years and years.  I've actually had the same pack for over a year now.  as long as I don't lose them, the bastards are so tough it takes months and months of serious abuse to wear them down to an unusable point.  I can't stand picks that are thin.  I pick so aggressively that I will break a thin-medium gauged pick damn near instantly.  I break strings a lot moer frequently than most players do too

I hate how thin and pussy your tone is when you pick like a ninny.  I pick the guitar like I'm beating my worst enemies ass.

:ripebanana:

The equilateral pick can be easier for beginners to hold and use since each corner is a playing edge.

The shark's fin pick can be used in two ways - normally employing the blunt end or the small perturbations can be raked across the strings producing a much fuller chord or used to employ a "pick scrape" down the strings producing a very harsh, scratching noise.

The sharp edged pick is used to create an easier motion of picking across the strings.

:snort:

Materials
[edit] Plastics

Most common picks are made out of various types of plastic. Most popular plastics include:

    * Celluloid. Historically, this was the first plastic ever used to produce picks, and it is still of some use today, especially for guitarists aiming for vintage tone. Occasionally, guitarists who smoke have accidentally discovered the extremely flammable nature of this material.

    * Nylon. Popular material, has a smooth and slick surface, so most manufacturers add a high-friction coating to nylon picks to make them easier to grip. Nylon is flexible and can be produced in very thin sheets. Most thin and extra-thin picks are made out of nylon. However, nylon loses its flexibility after 1–2 months of extensive use, becomes fragile and breaks, so guitarists that use thin nylon picks should have several spare picks just in case.

    * Tortex / Delrex. By Jim Dunlop and D'Andrea Picks respectively. Brand names for DuPont Delrin which is specially treated to have a matte, opaque surface, surprisingly easy to grip even with sweaty fingers.

    * Acetal. Acetal is a class of plastics, which is divided into two groups. The copolymer group, was first introduced by McAndrew Hoechst Celanese Corporation in 1960. Steve Clayton uses this branch for their line of Acetal picks. DuPont's (Wilmington, DE) Delrin developed and patented acetal homopolymer. Delrin is a Dupont trade mark/name. Dupont homopolymer acetal, is slightly harder, and stiffer than the copolymer branch. Also has a matte surface for grip, and is highly durable.

File:Standard-1.jpg
A few examples of Steve Clayton, Inc. Acetal/Polymer guitar Picks.

    * Ultem. This space age plastic has the highest stiffness of all plastic picks. Produces a brighter tone. Introduced by Steve Clayton, the material is additionally popular among mandolin players.

    * Lexan. Glossy, glass-like, very hard surface, though it wears out relatively fast. Barely bends at all and it's commonly used only for thick and extra-thick picks (> 1 mm). Usually has a high-friction grip coating. Best known example of Lexan picks are Jim Dunlop Stubby series.

Modern plastics can be ranged this way from the easiest to bend to the hardest: Nylon, Acetal, Delrin (Tortex/Delrex), Lexan, Ultem. This means that the same medium (for example, 0.70–0.80 mm) pick would be fairly flexible if made out of nylon and very solid if made out of Ultem.
[edit] Metal

Picks made out of steel will produce a much brighter sound than plastic ones. They do however wear the strings quickly and can easily damage the finish on the guitar if used for strumming, especially on acoustic guitars. Brian May of Queen uses picks which replicate his original choice — a silver sixpence coin.[2] Some of them are produced by The Royal Mint of England and are considered to be rare and precious among collectors. Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top uses a regular Mexican peso,[3][4] usually filed down to more usual pick shape, resembling 351.
[edit] Exotic

    * Agate. These gemstone guitar picks range in thickness from 1mm (very rare) up to 5mm, and cannot be flexed. Stone is a surprisingly versatile material because no mold or press is needed allowing a single pick to be crafted to the desired specifications. Though they take some getting used to, they offer the player a pick that is harder than metal (guitar strings) and can therefore resonate the strings more completely. Stone picks are (usually) polished smooth and some even come with grip features.

    * Lignum vitae is a rare hardwood with unique properties. It's very hard (4500 lbf[1], according to Janka Wood Hardness Rating) and its cellular structure is saturated with its own natural oil, giving a pick a unique feel and sound. Such picks are usually about 2-3 mm thick.

    * New Tortis is a manufactured from organic materials, and these picks come remarkably close to the sound and feel of the natural tortoise shell plectrums that were made from now-endangered sea tortoise. These plectrums are hard, smooth, and thick, having only slight tip flexibility. With careful use these picks can be sanded and polished for long life.

I think the pick definitely has a big part in how the sound comes out.

A big thick pick can make it sound so much stronger and bold. That's how I see it anyway.

Sometimes I find it hard to pick each note evenly, like if I'm coming down on heavier string from the lighter ones,I can dig in too hard.

I use my baby and ring fingers for rests too.

That's another thing;if I fingerpick,it can sound as if I'm scratching the strings,you know what I mean?

My thumb plays smooth but it's as if because my fingers are moving the other way, that it's not coming out right or something...

Or I could be just paranoid:lol: I hear it all the time though.

Edit: Meet Big Stubby

My friend just told me a while back that I should be moving on to heavier picks. I tried one and I haven't looked back since.

and im not sure...just grew up with that style of music and emulated it for years so i got really good at fingerpicking...i love the smoothness and softness it adds. when laying tracks down..ill fingerpick a track and play another with a guitar to add depth and some new sounds.

confidence is so key on guitar, or any instrument for that matter, or any thing for that matter.

But I think with guitar especially the people that can just throw down are usually better than the people who try to be super finesse and technical all the time.

Of course if you can do both really well then you're a god.

I always anchor my pinkie on the pickup guard on my guitar and use that as a reference.  honestly though, I can't really describe my picking style... the best I can give you is I studied Zakk Wylde and Dimebag's style like it was going out of style for years on end.  with idols like that you're bound to pick up a killer pick attack if you stick with it.  all I can tell ya is practice makes perfect.  no one guitarist plays exactly the same, just keep playing things until you get it right.

I bite my nails so they're never long enoug hto effect playing. I feel I do only use the tips though. Should I be using more of my finger? Like dig in more?

I feel it be hitting other strings if I did though...

confidence is k3y but practice really is the answer to being any good.  things like being technical and having finesse comes from dedication.  I always strive to be the best player I've ever heard.  I'm still not there yet so I still practice really really hard

"Then there are the fanatical atheists whose intolerance is the same as that of the religious fanatics, and it springs from the same source . . . They are creatures who can't hear the music of the spheres." (Albert Einstein)

Wiki to the rescue with strange facts:

Brian May of Queen uses picks which replicate his original choice — a silver sixpence coin.

Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top uses a regular Mexican peso,[3][4] usually filed down to more usual pick shape, resembling 351.

Eddie Van Halen holds the pick between his thumb and middle finger

Stevie Ray Vaughan also played with the rounded edge of the pick, citing the fact that the edge allowed more string attack than the tip. His manic, aggressive picking style would wear through pickguards in short order, and wore a groove in his beloved Fender Stratocaster, Number One, over his years of playing.

David Persons is known for using old credit cards, cut to the correct size, angle, and thickness and using them without a tip.

Jimmy Rogers and Freddie King had a special kind of technique utilizing two picks at once.
