Escalante National Monument

anyone have any backpacking recommendations for this area? that's my spring break destination, and hopefully i'll be able to get 3-4 nights in the backcountry.

right now, i'm looking at starting at the sheep creek trailhead, just south of canonville, hike to where it meets bull valley gorge and exploring slot canyons for a couple days, and hike out.

but anyone that is familiar with the area, i would welcome your input  my dog will be with me, so i prefer to stay near perennial steams and occasional springs or any fairly reliable water source.

can't wait for some sun, warmth, and solitude. :sun:

Beautiful area and great choice! I've been there on two occasions but went with a lady who guides on the side both times. I don't know your experience level but you should be prepared the heat there is crazy, trails are unmarked, and flash floods are not a joke. I'll upload some pictures for you now. I recall visiting Phipps arch and round valley draw.

Bleh, I'll upload them later tonight no time this second!

i'd love to see some pics. i have plenty of experience in the backcountry, and i know how unpredictable the desert can be. from the looks of the topo, there should be plenty of high ground to camp on, and awesome slot canyons to check out during the day. i've heard amazing things about escalante... i've been to capitol reef np, canyondlands, zion, etc, but national parks won't allow my dog so this seemed like a natural choice.

Will you have a truck or 4wd vehicle to get you into the back country? I drove Hwy 12 in between Bryce the I-70 a few years ago and man, that drive was amazing! You could spend months down there exploring different mountains, canyons, and rock formations.

nah, i should be able to get to the trailhead.. though it does look like the drive will be amazing itself, i'm sure i'll do some exploration, but we'll have to see what my good ol' ford taurus can handle
