I'm in love with those flowers!
I just got a cutting of a similar species not too long ago. Hope to have my own flowers next year.

Very nice. Here's the fringed Afghan poppy. Probably the nicest poppy out there IMO.

I mixed a fringed afghan with a vioilet last year, the planted seeds from them this year. I came out to find this open this morning

I guess it's a fringed Violet now lol... Cross pollination can be fun haha.
World Seed Supply- I got these from you this year, labeled as gigs, any idea on the actual strain? Or anyone else have an ID?

They're massive, the one flower measures over 7 inches across and the pod was already an inch in diameter the day it opened I was expecting the usual white and purple gigs but am more than pleased with the colors, they're beautiful. The pic is terrible quality, sorry. They are actually Tri-colored, starting with white at base, then a layer of purple and finishing with a nice red on the outer edge of the pedal. The dominant color is red, but it is 3 different colors as you look deeper into the flower. Very cool stuff

Active? Oh definitely, they're all Somni's, just not sure on the stain of the second one. Not that it matters lol, this is on track to be the biggest pod I've ever grown in all my years, so I'm happy

Day 2 after opening, the pod easily dwarfs my thumb. Started dropping pedals already.

My Asterias with a surprisingly yellow color.

the "surprise" is that i recall that the flower was white. Can cactus flower in different colors?

They will change colour, size or shape according to the conditions in which the buds were initiated, but that will only occur if extreme conditions happened (very hot or cold or dry or whatever). What happens frequently is that they change colour during the life of the flower, if the flowers live long enough. Not the case with Astrophytum, though. What you may have mistaken for "white" was perhaps the satiny surface of the petals?

While not exactly white, this is pretty different from the first photo
 same plant one year earlirer
At this point , i think it's just reflection of the orange part when the flower is not fully open?

Perhaps. Or some hybridization may have occured, because A. asterias is supposed to have yellow flowers with orange/red throats.

Only the third picture has poppies in it. All the other pictures just have weeds.

I was gifted a pack of poppies last year but when I went to plant them this year they were nowhere to be found. This thread is making me extra sad about it.
