Interesting stuff. The mushrooms Ps.Makarorae (Johnston and Buchanan) from New Zealand was very similar to Ps.Caurulipes and was was described differently purely on microscopic differences and location.
Ps.Aucklandii was described as nearly identical to to Ps.Zapotecorum with only minor differences and location delineating the two.
When Guzman and Watling happened on their Ps.Australiana they thought it was Ps.Cyanescens and it only differed on spore size and cystidia.
An interesting study is being conducted here in Aus currently using isozyme and Dna analysis of ps.cyanescens, ps.azurescens, ps.subaeruginosa (australiana, eucalypta), ps.bohemica and a few others with the direct aim of demonstrating that most woodlovers are actually differentiations of Ps.Cyanescens - possibly even compatible with Ps.Cyanescens.
Now there is some jargon for you!!

Thanks for your time and work Mr.Mushroom
Interessting,i'll have to find more  luckly it was
found in my woods so i enriched the pick site
with chipped hazel and (edit)willow. So next season
could bring more finds.

I have the dryed specimine still so if theres
anything anyone wonts to look into let me know.

The funny thing is it wasnt just found in cold weather it was found
in freezing temps. After the first frosts, and frost was present on the ground
i picked it from?So not so tropical i suppose.

Again thanks for your time

What was the duration of freezing temperatures previous to finding the specimen?

About 5 days with frosts twice i think but
my memory sucks :frown: i just know there had
been at least 2 frosts and one was on the day
of picking.I know this because i had stoped
searching the fields for semis and moved into
the woods(thanks to this site  as before hand i only
knew of semis and fly algarics in the uk)

To me it looked as id did in the photo.
It looked a purply brown to me.But it
was just a hint nothing like the Maz i
just printed.

Could you explane your workings and findings as
though talking to a idiot  as you sorta lost me

Did you find the spores to be smaller than cyans?
If so do you know what size. And what could be the other possiblitys.

Also what would i need to do this myself
at a beginers level.

Also what is a carpophore

Sorry about the 20 questions

Ah i see now   thanks for the sizes thats were i was most lost i was thinking erm
do i not understand this lol. When i thought i had sizes understood

I will keep you posted on the pick site though its going to  be a few months before any hope of more.

Was the mystery shroom from Ottawa pictured here?

If cyans came here in the 40s or earlyer as imports into kew gardens i suppose thats enougth time for a mutation to look pretty different from the origanl stock.
What do you think.

This may or may not be important, but before the frosts and snow it was very mild. Many plants were acting is if it was spring! Bulbs appeared and plants started to flower. Then Mother Nature said, ?tricked you? and froze the poor plants and dumped sevral inches of snow on them. I  :ooo:

The people conducting the study are botanists and when ive spoken to them about Psilocybes they thnik that many species are being delineated purely on questionable macroscopic and microscopic location variations. There is a big post in Advanced Mushroom CUlt about this study.
They are using isozyme, Dna and Spore intercompatibility and that should be comprehensive.
