Anyone here good with lichens?
    #12120894 - 03/01/10 02:41 PM (14 years, 30 days ago)

Found in my backyard growing from a fallen branch.

The trees that grow there are black cherry, silver maple, american elm, and ash, so it's growing from one or another :/

It's really interesting to me, and I'd like to find out what species it is.

Thanks in advance!

Something about lichens are off-putting to me...  Well, at least when they are posted on mushroom sites.

Sorry, I do not identify lichen, but maybe someone else has a clue.

I'm not sure what it is but I think it is beautiful. What state are you in? Could you try to figure out which tree the branch came from? I will try to ID it for you....

It has fungi in it, it seems like it fits here well enough to me.

I'm in Illinois.

I'll attempt to figure out the tree species right now, brb!

Without fungi lichens wouldn't exist, the same could be said for algae.
There are some good lichenologists who post regularly at MushroomObserver, someone there could surely identify it!
Something interesting about lichens is the fact that they take their genus and species names from the fungi that has the symbiotic relationship with either a green algae or a cyanobacterium!
inski.

Interesting stuff :/

I think it's actually growing from a Crabapple branch.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Yeah, I don't appreciate the lichen observations on MO...  But it is not my call.  And someone might be able to identify it if you post it there.

I also do not like puns, and every time I hear or read the word lichen, it seems that someone feels the need to chime in with an oh so clever pun.

Okay, I will try to stop hating on lichen...  At least in this thread.

The pun was at least relevant. Gone are the days when I would pun freely at the first opportunity. It has to mean something these days, you know?

I pretty much agree, sometimes I see a whole page at MO plastered with lichens, I just skip them as they don't really interest me that much.
Just stick to your Agarics and Slugs CureCat, they are much more interesting:cool:

If I ever get the chance, I'm gonna sneak into CureCat's apartment and stick a bunch of lichens under her pillow.

I have to agree with CureCat here, I never want to hear another "fun-guy" or lichen pun in my life... I have heard them all, they are not funny.

Do you know why the fungus and algae got married?
They took a lichen to each other
