question on overlay
    #1211976 - 01/12/03 02:41 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Okay, lets just say there are some casings in an inccubator, and that they've been in there about a week and a half. And one might also say that one of them showed spots of mycelium and were patched. And lets imagine that the other one has done nothing. Would this totally hypothetical cultivator have to worry about overlay underneth the casing layer of the second casing (this would be the one with no growth) or does overlay only happen once the mycelium has colonized through the casing?

We're gonna say that this is the first time this grower has try to case.
You know... hypothetically, of course.

Overlay *undernieth* the casing layer is a contradiction in terms... you want basically a solid block of Mycelium *under* the casing layer, but not *on* or *over* the casing layer... thus the term *overlay*

Overlay is when the mycelium has colonized almost all of or the whole casing layer.

Id say the casing layer is about 1/2 - 2/3 the size of the substrate layer. Something like 2/3" thick. The substrate is about 3/4" thick. This is just an aproximation though.

You used too much casing on that.
1/4" would have been better for so little of a substrate.

So a good ratio of the thickness of the casing layer to the substrate would be around 1:3 ?

Info from the FAQ

I tend to use 4" of substrate or more and never use more than 1/2" or 3/4" of casing...just my personal preference.
