i'm pastuerizing some dehydrated poo, now rehydrated of course, and it smells like ammonia! is this still usable? it came from lowes so i guess it isnt too fresh or anything like that. its being baked @170f in the oven. Does anybody know if this ammonia smell is normal?

You better leach it. You don't want to be using poo that smells like ammonia.

sounds like it might still have some piss in it. try running some water thru it then let it dry and try again.
This is what I do with fresh (not to fresh dung) To make sure all the cow and horse piss is out.
I have actually had very good sucess with taking a 55gal drum and attaching serveral layers of window screen to. I then use a pump to pump fresh spring water thru it for around 20-30 mins. then redry on some sceen frames. I use this to do alot of poo. I'm sure a 5gal bucket would work also.
Save the water it works gr8t for MJ
I found without doing this that I get a large drop in size and amount of shrooms. I'm not sure if the spring water has something the mushrooms like or if washing it is causing this. But long as it works i'm stikin to it

normal
I'd let it sit in water and leach for quite a few hours. Then rinse it out good....before pasturizing.
here is the horse poo tek...you might want to follow this for pasturization.

good luck!

I've always had problems with my sack o shit bag drying inside. It works gr8t for me if i hang it outside for a day or so. Maybe it has to do with the way I screen my dung.
During the winter most days are to cold to hang wet dung out. Heres what I found helps out it's a bit of over kill but I've never had one tank go bad.
I screen my dry cow dung thru a window screen.
I then add wheat straw I eye ball it.
put it all in a pillow case and pasturise for 1 hour or so.
Put pillow case in the sink to cool.
I then try to press out the water from the dung and straw thru the pillow case.
this is basic stuff the part that makes it diff is that the dung can take up to three days to be ready for use if i let it dry in the house.
After i do a water pasturise I then do a oven pasturise. Same basic way everyone does it.
Except I fell asleep during the first time and left it in for 3 hours. The top was dry and hard and about a inch thick. Under that was some of the best dung/straw i've ever used. This was a total flook but i like the way it works + i get pretty good yeild so I'm happy my tanks don't go bad. What more can you ask for.
