Koyaanisqatsi
    #1211117 - 01/12/03 05:40 AM (14 years, 9 days ago)

I ate some shrooms last night with a couple friends. We were sitting around listening to some music and one of my friends pulled out a movie called Koyaanisqatsi. None of us knew what this movie was gonna be about including my buddy who had the dvd. Basicly it's a lot like Baraka but imo much better. It was filmed mostely in the 70's so it had a very retro feel to it. The imagery in this film is unbelievable, you have to see it.
Also has a sound track by Phillip Glass.

If you liked it then you'll probably be interested to know that it's the first movie in a trilogy. The second movie (Powaqqatsi - bet that's the only word around with a double "Q") is out on DVD also, and the third (Naqoyqatsi) is expected sometime later this year.

Check out this website for more than you probably wanted to know.

One of the only three movies that I actually own (the other two being "Apocalypse Now" and "Once were Warriors").

It is best seen in a movie theater with a killer sound system and a huge screen, but I guess if you have a home theater system with a good subwoofer it would be almost as good. The sound track is fantastic -- I have it on CD. I got a chance to see the Phillip Glass Ensemble at the National Arts Center Opera House in Ottawa many years ago. Impressive.

The movie is visually stunning. Amazing imagery, and Glass's soundtrack fits it perfectly. I haven't seen Powaqaatsi, but all the reviews I've read say it is not nearly as good as Koyaanisqatsi. I'd still like to see it one day.

I would also recommend Baraka, by Ron Fricke, the cinematographer for Koyaanisqatsi. It is even better, IMO.

I liked Baraka, but Koyaanisqatsi simply blew me away.

Baraka's pretty cool - but the sequence with the battery hens is far too much to for me to watch tripping :frown:

Koyaanisqatsi is a film I just keep coming back to time and time again

I definitely prefer Baraka.. the others bored me to death.. it was all in slow motion, unbearable.
