Dung doesn't like me...
    #1209746 - 01/11/03 04:30 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I collected some shite from a field the other day (not entirely sure what kind but probably from a horses rectum) and have had no luck whatsoever using it.
I tried some jars using a mix of dung, BRF and verm (to try growing p. tropicalis) but had zero germination. Tried the same recipe with cubies and again nothing...there was no signs of contamination in any of the jars.
Then tried spawning a mix of pasturised dung and straw with crumbled up cakes but again no growth...the bits of cake just sat there and didn't fluff up at all like they usually do after a day or two to recover. it's as if something is totally inhibiting growth.
Any ideas?

Hello,

I've never tried dung, but I've been reading up a bunch on it. Horse poo to be exact. I'm about to try it with some creepers I got colonizing.

The only thing I can think of is...

... did you make sure you had it in a warm enough place.

... also maybe the food that that specific animal ate had anti-fungus stuff in it. I know down in flordia farmers feed their cows this stuff with their food which makes mycelium growth impossible. They do it for just this reason, so no shroomers come picking mushies on their land.

As long as it had proper moisture, and temperature I can't see why it wouldn't start colonizing the poo!

Hopefully I don't have this problem with mine!

Peace,
Gthirteens

Sounds like your horse poo might have been too fresh.
You want dried out horse poo....fresh poo has ammonia from piss in it.

Try soaking in a bucket of water to leach out any extra nitrogen. Drain out over night. Mix together the Vermiculite and BRF then add this to the leached manure. Load into jars and PC for 60 min. at 15 psi.

If you wanna spawn it. Leach overnight in water. Drain overnight. Then either let it dry, and then pasteurize it. Or if you wanna use it after draining, add vermiculite until the moisture content seems right, then pasteurize.

If leaching doesn't work, find a new source of manure.

Manure from a pasture wouldn't contain any urine. The horse does each activity seperately-usually. If they are confined in a stall, then the poo would be peed on.
I second the vote for the fan.

Thinking about it,  there was a very strong smell of ammonia when the pressure cooker was opened, which I thought at the time was probably not a good sign
Maybe that's it then. I'll try leaching etc, or try and find some composted manure from somewhere...not had any luck so far.

Leach it even if they are from a field, they still have to much Nitrogen when fresh. Not related to urine, but the shit itself.

True-grasses give off ammonia gas when they decompose.

I've found older dung to be better.
Try looking around barns for compost piles or in older barns.
Seems to clean out better. I also screen it thru fine screen after it dries helps get out all the bugs and other stuff.

On another note cows will piss and take a shit while standing in 1 place.
Horses will move around unless they have a rider.
Not that i'm a expert on animal pissing and shiting habits. Just something i have noticed.
I'd wash it just for the sake of doing it anyway. Can't hurt it.
