Police can search your car without cause in some instances

It was super snowy and the snow was covering up the sign that informed me I was pulling into state prison property. It was minimum security so it just looked like an apartment complex or dorm, especially with all that fluffy snow.
After looking up from my map I saw a police officer. He searched my car (and was a real asshole), because I had so much stuff it took a couple of hours.
I did what I was supposed to, told him I did not consent, told him he needed probably cause. But on NH prison property you waive your rights upon entering.
Plus the charges for drugs are higher on prison property. He only found rolling papers, and said he could charge me for those on prison property.
If he found a stem or seed it would have been a felony.

Police can even pull you over and conduct a "safety or regulatory type" check on your vehicle and trick you into letting them search your vehicle as well. Legally, they can ask you to pop your hood for illegal modifications or what have you. In reality, they can search your car pretty much without consent or warrant. Why? Because they can lie. "I thought I saw something suspicious"(drugs/weapons) would be just cause. Also, they can't open locked things like glove boxes or lock boxes without a warrant. Although, if they impound or seize your vehicle they will break into whatever in no time.
Drive carefully all the time.

Sounds like a real asshole. A couple of hours? That's just unbelievable. That's nearing the max time limit for roadside detention in my state (which is itself a joke)
My car is probably not as clean as I'd like it. I think I'm going to vacuum it pretty soon here.

Yeah he was doing crap like opening up bic pens looking for joints.
And then there was a rookie cop who was playing good cop, he actually seemed kind of nervous.

The only good thing about impounding is that if they do not search every single car impounded, they cannot use what they've found while searching yours in court. They can't pick and choose which vehicle to search. A good lawyer would look into this and obtain the search records for the impound.

That won't go anywhere because the police are allowed to search anyone on prison property.

In government buildings you basically have no rights
You aren't allowed to bring in weapons of any kind so they use that to justify searching everyone with a metal detector in some buildings.

my friend got pulled out of the car and searched because my hand shook when i handed him my ID to show I was 21 since I had closed beers in my lap during the afternoon. so when he got to court they said he was suspicious for my hand shaking so he had probable cause. what sucks is my arm spasms from a spine injury i got 2 years back and that essentially got my friend arrested. they searched him and the car then decided to search me and found nothing on me. luckily my friend only got a fine but just goes to show how little they really need.

I would think with a good lawyer you could fight that kind of bullshit

Did your friend attempt to fight his probable cause determination, and if so, how?

Rolling papers constitute drug paraphernalia. Especially with a lack of tobacco present. A small pouch of tobacco is a viable defense against rolling papers as drug paraphernalia, because the papers can then be claimed to be used for rolling cigarettes. However, in many states including NH tobacco items and lighters are prohibited on prison property.
http://www.nh.gov/nhdoc/documents/Rules_of_Conduct.pdf
It states that "You, your Vehicle, and your Property are Subject to Search without Warning." It makes it a tricky and complicated matter. If you feel your rights may have been violated in any way, consult a lawyer.
Never carry paraphernalia or contraband in public. It's always asking for trouble, because youre coming in contact with a lot of people including officers and unexpected circumstances can lead places you dont want to be in.

Actually, upon entering the prison grounds you tacitly agree to be searched if asked. It's the same thing at the airport.
