It always makes me sad to see someone that has a bad relationship with a parent. My wife has a dad whom she cares little for. He was pretty mean to her as a child. But things have gotten better between them in recent years.

I am lucky enough to have a wonderful father. He is truly my greatest hero and role model. In fact, I wrote a poem a few years back entitled "My Hero". It is about my dad.

Sorry that you don't get along great with your pops, I agree with ^^^^^, it makes me sad to see when people don't have good relationships with their parents, not to say you are at fault, probably to the contrary. Well, good luck, and remember, he may be a shitty dad, but he's the only dad you got.

:frown:

I remember when my dad split.  Its a tough thing to go through.  I try to remember that I love him and want him to do whatever it takes to make himself happy.  I also try to remember I'm my own person and can live my life how I want it.  Your dad's probably not senile just a little scared and having trouble putting his thoughts together.  Try to see his suffering and understand, you can deal with your own in therapy later. mauah

I'm sorry to hear this. My situation is reversed...I have an amazing father and a mother who split. I've never really had a mom in my life, even though she lives one city over. It's always been very hot and cold between us. I dont know if the rift between us can ever be mended, but I will always have hope that it will. Sometimes I think a part of me will always be bitter, but I hope that changes too. Anway, I can sympthize. It really scuks not getting along with family. I can only tell you what helps when she lets me down...
I see her as human, someone who's just as misguided in life as the rest of us. I know somewhere in there she loves me, and she is the only mom I've got. I'm sure I make mistakes too. All you can do is make the most of the situation you're given, and accept it with open arms. But it's not usually as bad as you think it's going to be.
I bet your dad just needs some things in his life worked out. Maybe give him some space, maybe give him the benefit of the doubt, at least to a certain extent. He is your dad, after all.
I hope it all works out for you.
