How does one use an aquarium heater in a setup? Does it go in water? and any suggestions on which make or model? What are some other good ways to heat a cooler while saving space?

So it is good to use a heater in the cooler also after mixing the substrate with the casing before fruiting?

yes, it good to use start the growth. Once this happens (pins)... you can remove it to grow them faster or leave it in for smaller more potent mushies.
someone correct me if im wrong.

er.... er.... hehe he he... er.... don't mix the substrate with the casing, dude, the casing goes on top.
after pinning, you don't lower the temp, you lower the humidity. you lower the temp from higher to lower when moving from incubator to terrarium for pinset (post casing, prepinning) and watching and waiting and smiling and worrying and fanning and reading and smoking.....
the tubby for the mubby can't be grubby or you'll sobby. er...... er..... hehe hehe heh er......

yes , like i said you can keep the heat, but its gonna give you smaller yet more potent mushies, and more aborts (when the tops get blackish)
SO: take that heater out during fruiting for better crops. hey im new here too, my job at work just lets me cruise 60 pages of post on a T1 connection...best part is im gettin paid.

the other kind of aquarium heater set-up is an upright heater (not submersible) in a jar of water. no double-container. i use that kind. i put it in the cooler with my colonizing jars. in addition to heating the jars, it also provides humidity as the water evaporates inside the cooler. where i live, i need the extra humidity to keep grain jars from drying too fast.

you don't mix the casing with the substrate. you put down a layer of substrate then put a casing layer on top (and underneath if you like).

we're all idiots here! welcome aboard! I'm not sure about smaller more potent mushies in a warmer setup - sounds fishy to me.
you mix substrate with more substrate ('spawning') to increase bulk. the casing is a non-nutritious layer that protects, moisturises and gets rid of wrinkles.

I use the same heating technique, work's quite nicely as i can keep my temp. to the degree...I'm still in my first incubation stage, and i'm having no trouble's with my temp, but going to have a harder time with my humidity when I birth...going to use a bubbler..

in the hawkseye web site it says to also add about a half inch of casing over the mycelium layer, is this right?

sciencediet: pretty much correct - about 1/4 - 1/2 inch casing layer for every inch deep of substrate underneath.
NiGGy - i don't think it'll bring you whole room up by more than a degree, unless your room is like a phonebox, but it'll certainly work inside a growtub.
