Avatar has caused Nation Wide Depression.
    #12085531 - 02/23/10 07:54 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Personally Avatar had depressed me after seeing it as well , not because I couldn't live in the fantasy world of Pandora , But because we as a people are so far from the connection shared between life and all things as displayed in the film . My journey of psychedelics and meditation have made me feel much more in touch with everything as I'm sure many of you have . So I'm wondering did Avatar make you depressed , happy , sad, what have you ?

It didnt make me feel anything.  I thought it was shallow and trite.  The 3-D was cool though.

If I had seen it I would be depressed knowing I spent $8-12 on a piece of shit 2 hour
thing. When I could have spent $25.00 for a good blu ray that will play many, many times.

I have had a dream so beautiful that I wished it to never end.

and I guess I can see how watching avatar could be like having a dream...

but I feel sorry for anyone who needs James Cameron to dream for them.

It was pretty, but that sort of pretty that I really like...

The whole network thing kinda made sense to me.

BUT, it's just a movie...  and I don't think it was as good as everybody was saying.

Yeah, the 3-D was good.

It was no Lord of the Rings, but it was still a damn good movie.  It had creative, thought provoking ideas and did an excellent job of playing with my emotions and entertaining me.  The animation was fucking badass, but it would still have been a fucking great movie without them.

prettymuch summed it up for me, I think that people know that the way we live now is terribly wrong, It makes me wonder how James Cameron managed to make it so inspiring / strike such a chord. I liked how the idea of CHI was put in there too, nice touch

IMO, if a large number of people actually felt that same yearning after seeing Avatar, and felt it strongly enough for it to register as "depression," then Avatar deserves to be regarded as an artistic accomplishment of extremely high import.

Avatar's accomplishment was not clever writing or a delightfully twisted plot -- there are a myriad of movies you can watch for those qualities.
No, Avatar's accomplishment was the vivid communication of a vision of life on Earth that modern civilization has cleft from our psyches, leaving a gaping vacuum in our collective experience of the world. We need more movies and art like Avatar to fill that gap and heal the human mind.

Avatar gave me a lot of emotions...amazement, excitment, wonder,  feelings of "I wanna go there", and a little bit of depression. I should also point out on was on about 10 large Ps. stunztii shrooms at the time, and they may have contributed to the feelings of wonder and amazement...

It gave me mild, one-day depression because (A) I could never go on a wild adventure like the main characters did in the movie and (B) because our species have treated other life so poorly, like deforestation, massive habitat loss due to harvesting natural resources, hunting fish and wildlife to the point of extinction and non-recovery, pollution of the air and water, poor treatment of livestock (although me eating them doesn't help), urban modernism, etc.

But those feelings only lasted about a day, because after that, I usually forget about the movie I just saw and move on with my life. Was it life-changing? Sort of, but only temperarly. It did however make me think of Native Americans, and how similar their view of the world is to the Nai've. Makes me wish sometimes that our human race would go back to those simple "living with nature, not againist it" ways...but I'm afraid its already too late....

In the near future, I plan on going back to see Avatar, this time in a IMAX theater on a large dose of LSD mixed with homegrown cubenis mushrooms and a little weed. Hopefully, that will open my eyes to what Avatar's message is really trying to say....because its more than just entainment: its beautiful art with something important to say...I just got to find out what that message is....

This time, I want to be part of Pandora :sunny:

I'm gonna go with angry because I can never get my money back. That movie was the stupidest, sappiest piece of shit I have ever seen. The characters were one dimensional and I saw the ending from a mile away. And for a budget of more than a quarter billion dollars the special effects weren't that impressive.

I'm thinking that CrazyBoy just unplugged from The Matrix right before seeing Avatar, and the immersive photo-realistic graphics of the Matrix cannot compare to the 3-D depth-effect of Avatar....

Man, Nick Swardson was right: there are way too many jaded people out there. If Avatar was shown in IMAX theaters just 50 years ago, people's minds would exploded. I mean, how can you be so jaded? Are you not impressed by anything anymore? Is it all just not good enough for you? Have you seen better special effects than the ones in Avatar (besides the Matrix world you came from)?

Too Much Jadedness these days... :nonono:
