what to eat while trying to lose weight and get back into shape?

i plan on going grocery shopping some time this week and i was wondering what types of things i should buy and what not to buy.

im looking to lose some fat, my beer belly, bulk up some, and just be in great shape all around. right now im 5'5 and weigh 165 pounds. lol.

any sites out there that might help with this planning?

I just try to stay away from carbs and eating late.  I have been doing this for three months along with yoga and have lost about 25 pounds.  I'm 5'11 and was at 215 now about 192 and feel much better. Good Luck mate!:thumbup:

Though expensive, I've been replacing snacks with smoothies like Naked juice and etc to fill me up instead. Gives me a lot more energy too. I know you can make your own for way less, but I'm lazy :awesome:

thank you for all the input.

from what ive gathered it will be best too...

eat my biggest meal in the morning
drink at least 6 liters of water a day
run daily
excercise daily
eat healthy (chicken, rice, oats, fruits, veggies, fish...)
take daily vitamins (one a day and fish oil)
lift weights

if i follow all of this with a positive attitude then i should have no problem losing weight and putting on muscle.

am i missing anything?

it's better to eat a bunch of small meals throughout the day, than 3 big ones btw

this is a complex question, but simple advice would be: 

- eat good carbs in the morning, like high fiber, low sugar cereals.  add some cheap protein from a couple scrambled eggs. (even better, use only egg whites) 

- base your meals around lean meats like chicken and fish.

- include high vitamin/nutrient vegetables in your meals like steamed broccoli, baby spinach salad, avocado etc...

- replace all your high sugar snacks and drinks (soda and beer especially!) with fresh fruits like oranges, bananas, raspberries, blueberries etc, or make smoothies to drink with all these fruits...

- eat these good foods sensibly.  do NOT starve yourself by any means, but keep portion sizes down.  the stomach is a funny thing. it has the ability to stretch and shrink quite a bit, depending on how much food you normally send down there.  for example, just because you could probably stuff a whole pizza down, doesn't mean you should.  the stomach will be full after 2 slices, if you wait the time it takes for your body to tell your mind you are full, then cut yourself off.  never stuff yourself.  you've heard the phrase "my eyes were bigger than my stomach".  also, its better for metabolism to eat more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day than to eat 2 or 3 large meals that stuff you.

- drink a LOT of water.  water is a big part of being healthy.  it moves the good nutrients through the body more efficiently and makes you feel more full.  drinking excess amounts will make you feel better and keep your liver and kidneys in order. the only downfall of lots of water means lots of trips to the bathroom, which can be a little annoying.  keep a water bottle with you at all times, cause if its in your hand you will subconsciously drink more.  most of the time the feeling of hunger is mixed up with the feeling of thirst.  a trick for people trying to cut calories: when you feel hungry, but know its not time to eat yet, drink 16oz of water, wait 15 minutes and if you are still hungry then its time to eat, but most of the time the water is all your body needed.

- EXERCISE.  when combined with eating right, it really is the only way to lose weight and get more energy without taking pills and supplement and shit like that.  the key is to make the exercise fun.  it doesn't necessarily mean lifting weights and running on a treadmill (which will work just fine though!).  personally i can't stand gyms, so i get all my daily exercise outside doing something i enjoy (mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, longboarding, etc)


good luck bro, its definately a lifestyle change to lose weight/get in shape, and that can be really hard to keep up with.  stick with it though, you'll start seeing results in a month or so.  the hardest part is getting started, but once you do, it will only become easier and easier to lose the fat and gain the muscle.

Focus on losing weight first. Putting on muscle while losing weight doesn't work well. You need a surplus of calories to gain and a low amount to get rid of fat.

The best way for me is to avoid eating after 7 or 8 pm.  It's rough at first especially if you smoke pot but eventually your body will adjust.  Also you will drop flab pretty rapidly if you avoid sugary drinks and snacks.

Try doing pushups as well before you go to bed you'll see results in a couple of weeks and you will feel a lot better.

ha i know, hence my last statement.


and yeah, Naked juices are the SHIT! ...if you can afford the expensive but tasty little bastards.  i too could make my own, but fuck all that haha.  i always get the blue, green, red and purple machine flavors cause they have so much shit it them!  now they even make a few kinds with 30+ grams of protein in them, which are great for refueling right after heavy activity.

I'm in the process of doing all this, hehe, eating well and exercising daily. I find lots of green tea throughout the day keeps my appetite down :smile:

I am a drinker though, anyone know what kind of liquor has the least amount of carbs? I'll probably switch off beer, since it's making progress sort of hard.

actually wine is the best choice if you're talking calories per serving/ABV...pretty sure most of the hard liquors are similar in calories, but its the sugary mixers that get you.  most people slam down a bunch of soda or juice with their drinks, adding to the calories you are already getting in the alcohol.  its not hard for someone to drink 2000 calories when they are drinking all night...and this is the worst part of the day to consume a major excess of calories.

remember alcohol breaks down to sugars in the body, meaning empty calories that you don't want.  its hard to lose weight and get into shape when you drink often...thats why my daily buzz consists of lots of herbs: no calories, no hangover.  :bigblunt:  :bongload:  :yesnod:

The biggest thing I can say is don't diet, change how you live. It's the only way to lose the weight and keep it off. Diets are temporary, implying you lose the weight and youre done. Then people go back to their old habits. You gotta change those habits and start to eat right, make a conscious decision that this is how you are going to live from now on. Otherwise, I guarantee that weight is back on a few months after you lose it.

Sorry I didn't say what to eat or where to look, I don't really know, but I think that's some good advice lol.

I'm fat and don't really control portions or try to be thinner, but I do avoid processed foods. Basically just stay away from the entire middle of the grocery store.

Anything processed, packaged, excessively branded, manufactured or heavily advertised is probably not very good for you. Carrots? they are not advertised, lol.

You'll do a lot better if you can find a source for delicious produce. Like, is there an asian, Indian or hispanic run produce shop in your area? GO THERE. Americans are used to shitty bland produce and it's not fun to eat food without flavor. That's why we add fat and oil to everything. Look for inherently more tasty stuff you will WANT to eat because it tastes good. Delicious raw sliced veggies are good on their own, or with healthy low-fat dips like bean hummus with roasted garlic; asian sesame peanut sauce, etc. There are tons of recipes online for low-fat dips. Also, ethnic groceries are usually cheaper.

Look into whole grains and bulk foods that might take a little more planning to eat. Barley, brown rice, dried beans, etc.
You can cook up a bunch in the weekend and eat them all week.

I do stuff like caramelize onions, toast pine nuts, saute garlic into chips, chop herbs and stir it into room-temp cooked barley or lentils. Make a vinegar and olive oil dressing. Keep stuff in the fridge that can be easily assembled together into meals and snacks.

Don't totally avoid fat, you will get hungry. Best fats are from fish like salmon, avocado, olives, nuts. I love cheese (it keeps me fat, lol...) but there are more healthy cheeses to choose. Hard cheeses like parmesan, pecorino, even gruyere. you can mix a small amount of feta or goat cheese into low fat Greek yogurt for a great add-in to salads or topping for salmon.

If you spend more time enjoying food, thinking about where it comes from and how it affects your body then you will likely lose weight slowly or at least improve your health.

Cutting out beer will really help.

I only drink like 1 night, maybe 2 a week, and not to excess.. I wonder how bad tonic water is? Gin and tonic is one of my faves, and doesn't seem like it'd be too bad for you, sugar-wise. Hmm...

im a drinker too. mostly beer all the time. every night actually. i wont drink more then a 6 pack, but still.

my first thing will to try and stop drinking. i dont mind wine. i actually like wine.
