Habitat:
home cow manure patch

Gills:

Stem:
this one 3 inches long, Very strong coming from what looks like a tuba type base(some others even look like claws)also about1-2mm thick, blue/black in colour

Cap:
see pic. white to cream, around 3-5mm diam.

Spore print color:
in progress not sure if mature yet

Bruising:
stem etc too dark to tell

Other information:
I found these in the field and transplanted them to my garden patch cause I thought the blue claws looked cool, They are popping up everywhere in amongst my pans and cubes now!

It looks like it could be a Cordyceps species, cut open the bulbous base and see if there is an insect larvae in there!

Good call, Inski! That thought never occurred to me. I assumed it was a sclerotium.

sclerotium:lol:

If it is a Cordyceps species the bulbous base could be referred to as a sclerotium!

Haha, I get some funny looks when I mention the word:laugh:

Well, it's not a Cordyceps species, I'm not sure what it is but it's very interesting!
Can you try to make a spore print on white and black paper or foil to try to determine what colour the spores are?

These are freaking cool as, but I have absolutely no idea what they are. The only names that run through my head are Laccocephalum sp., which I doubt as they don't grow on dung to my understanding. The other one that has an underground sclerotium are some members of the Polyporus genus, again I doubt it is this but

well as far as I can tell the print is white or off white its very hard to tell as the caps are so small! there was some whitish powder that came off when I cut off the cap but I still dont know if they are mature yet? I will keep an eye on the others in my garden to see what they do!

You should try posting them on the SAB forum in the Mycology section. Maybe someone in there knows more about it.

Here are some better pics of the underside! Not even going to get into how hard it is to photo a 4mm shroom and get detail to show up lets just say it took a lot of tries!

to me, it appears more like a mold not pores. maybe gills underneath? whatever it is, is really bazaar. i've never seen anything like it, but that's nothing new when it comes to mushrooms.

The white stuff reminds me of the powder found on the 'antlers' of Xylaria hypoxylon, not that I think that is what it is at all though.

Cool fungi!

It's already been posted there but there have been no suggestions yet.
http://mushroomobserver.org/33986?search_seq=1327355

It's quite strange and interesting, maybe it is a Cordyceps species that parasitizes another fungus instead of an insect similar to the way Elaphocordyceps species parasitizes Elaphomyces species!
Just because the Trusted Identifiers have this tag doesn't mean they can Identify every fungus out there, the more you learn the more you realize the world of fungi is an inexhaustible one with new species being found and described all the time, new species will continue to be discovered as long as there are mycologists living on earth.

Excellent! At least its getting out there! Did you post it up there?? I understand the vastness of fungi species and that TI's cant be expected to know everything! I still have the specimens in my garden patch so it will be possible to do further study on these little fellows and they seem to be quite happy to grow there at the moment. Since finding these they have intrigued me to the point of near obsession!lol Guess Im hooked on fungi! Who would be best to contact to allow it to be properly analised ie. uni's,museums, colleges etc.? I think the need to know is going to start effecting my sleep!! :stoned2:

Have you posted it on Shaman Australis yet?

Someone there is more likely to know as it is an Australian board. If that doesn't help you contact the local Royal Botanical Gardens in your major city. They are the ones who usually deal with fungi, they do charge a small fee to id mushrooms.

Some info from one of my books that pertains to Poronia erici:

Quote:

Fruit bodies to 10mm across, irregularly round with a finely wrinkled surface scattered with large ostioles. It occurs on herbivore dung including Kangaroo, Wallaby, Wombat, rabbit and occasionally horse dung. Spores c. 25×16μm, ovoid to bean shaped, smooth, dark Brown
