Multiple ID request, Panaeolus Cyanescens or Panaeolus Antillarums.
    #12044881 - 02/17/10 03:37 AM (14 years, 2 days ago)

Hi all, was hoping I could ask some assistance as I do not want to id 50+ mushrooms & annoy the shit out of every one here, anyways, after 20 minutes of checking a paddock next to my house I have come to the conclusion that I have a few finds consisting of Panaeolus Cyanescens (hopefully) or Panaeolus Antillarums (hope not).

I am wondering is there any easy way of separating these two, apart from blue bruising, should I be looking for anything else specifically.

I may have left this hunt a little too late, considering it has not rained for 2 days & has been quite sunny & hot. Would it be possible that the Cyans bruising can appear almost black & the stems a lot browner than usual? Could this be from the heat during the day or more a characteristic of Antillarums?. Is it possible that I have Cyans that are starting to develop mould & showing darker colors. If thats the case are they worth drying or am I gonna make myself sick eating these?

I have some that seem a lot fresher with whiter stems with definate blue bruising, some with browner stems really dark near black bruising. Some have awesome blue like veins on the caps.

I am currently spore printing each group of finds but can nearly be sure that they will be dark brown or nearly black so its safe to say that they are edible, but can I tell easily if they are active or not.

Any comments or suggestions in this regard is welcome.

Please excuse me if I am asking the impossible but I am very new to this & I have not stopped thinking about mushrooms since I found some actives a few days ago!!

Also please excuse if I sound ignorant as I reckon I have no idea what I'm talking about. By no means do I know what I'm doing!!

Looking forward to some replies,

Regards,

Nifto

All mushrooms found growing in or near cow dung, South East Coast Australia,

Stems range from white in colour to light brown to near black, hollow

Caps range from creamy white with brown centers to brown with blue veins

Gills are dark brown all attached to the cap & stem

Panaeolus cyanescens for pic #7. The bluing is clearly evident. The rest is too mangled and dark for me to distinguish. Check for the blue bruising (real blue bruising, not projected). If they bruise blue, they are the real deal. None of them are P. antillarum. If anything then maybe a mix of P. cyanescens and P. papilionaceus.

BTW, you can pick mushrooms without going berserk on the substrate and wreaking havoc. Just pinch them off with your fingernails near the base. It makes my eyes water just looking at your photos. Poor things. The more they turn blue, the more potency is lost (even if it doesn't make that much of a difference, but still), because the bluing is caused by psilocin oxidizing.

Can anyone shed any light on the dark stem showing near black, I was moderately fast when picking these as the sun was setting, but was careful not to mess them up for identification.
Pictures a low res, do you need to see them higher for a better ID, I can do them again if it will help, If it comes to it I will be destroying these in a few hours.

Panaeolus cyanescens turns blue, then black after awhile.

Hmmm. Must have been the monitor I used to look at the pics at work. They are much lighter and crisper with better contrast now. I agree. All cyans.

Nice collection. I'm gonna look for these once the weather warms up a bit. I know I don't have much chance in England but around London is perhaps the warmest part and they've been reported in france, so maybe.

I can't wait till I find my first Cyan! I just have 1000's of cubes at my disposal, but no cyans :frown:

I have seen similar looking ones from the road, but haven't had a chance to get a close look... I've also found plenty of similar looking mushrooms to cyans, but no bruising :frown:

Where abouts are you nifto? They seem to be in more of an abundance in N QLD from what I've seen on here.

1000cubes for 500cyans should be fair :smilingpuppy:

Anyway, I have a feeling I'll end up in a cyan abundance area in one point in my near travels :borat:
