fan placement in monotub room... what's the best setup?
    #12065643 - 02/20/10 02:11 PM (14 years, 13 days ago)

Hi again, so my friend is trying to fruit his gray mycelium monotub to see how it goes (if you've read my previous posts about it, it's kind of a funny story). Anyways, in regard to fan placement, he finally got an oscillating fan, and he's wondering where to put it in the room. Not directly pointing at the tub, having a light breeze on the tub, or pointed out of the room so air is just moved around a bit? Is there a science to this so that A. the tub doesn't dry out and B. that enough FAE occurs to initiate pinning and give healthy mushrooms? Thanks, as always, you guys are the best. Eternally grateful for this forum,
CaptainAhab

man I love mono tubs...I have heard people say there is a science to everything but my history hasn't pointed anything for me. With that said just put the fan about 6 feet away and keep it on low/med. The sub is in the tub so to speak so if you put a fan on high 3 feet away it's not going to do damage. 6 feet away and make sure he has his tub about 5 feet off the ground. Mold spores, dust, contam like to float low.
I have ocd so I take everything to the next level. Good luck:rockon:

I don't use a monotub but a shotgun FC, it's similar though isn't it.

Last week I was positioning my fans and first tried to blow air through holes in the chamber for 15 minutes like every 3 hours (my clock-switch works with 15 minute steps).
But I noticed there was a lot of humidity blown away like that, I actually went to 50%. Now I put the fan at an angle to reduce the airflow and that seems to work.
Just to be sure I do some manual airing sometimes as well.

this was a good point but I never had that problem. I just never put the fan on direct.

Shouldn't be to big of a deal exactly were you put the fan but don't point it directly at the monotub if you do it'll dry it out rather quickly.

Place the fan in front of the tub,....FACING AWAY.........this will draw air thru mono tub on it's way into the intake of the fan. It's just cleaner air ,wrather than blowing all the particle that are picked up in the fans current. There will still be particulates with intake air ,but most have had a chance to settle to the ground or other surfaces, plus you will keep the rh up much longer.

Just curious, for future reference, if you had a walk in closet with about 5 tubs of 5.5 foot racks, where would you place the fan then?

Either hang a small desk fan from/on shelf ,facing out the closet(acting as exhaust for the closet). With a regular; Box/window fan, I'd place it right at the threshold facing out of the closet, also acting as closet exhaust.

Thanks for the replies... Seems like there are differences of opinion about tbus subject. Just want to do what works... Will probably end up pointing oscillating fan facing the exit of said closet, maybe pointed up so as to swirl some air into the closet. A compromise, of sorts. I doubt this tub will even fruit, I think its infected. Might as well try, I suppose. Thanks again

Regardless of which way you point the fan,it is pulling air out of the closet, and automatically air will exchange w/ air drawing in  from below ,above, and around the fan it self.
Do you have pics of this substrate that "may" be infected ???We may be able to comment.

I just place the fan anywhere near the tub with out the fan blowing on the tub. That can cause bruising of the sub. Basically the most important thing is to just have the air moving around. The location of the fan isn't all that important so long as it's doing the task of moving air around near the tub. You basically just want the fan somewhere near the tub is all.

Agreed, just as long as it is close, and not blowing directly on your sub/tub.

here's a picture of it I posted the other day:

How's that look? It's a completely gray mycelium, and as been ever since it was inoculated. It smells and looks exactly like mycelium, except it's gray. It's definitely not cobweb, and it doesn't smell sour or fruity... just like fresh mushrooms.

I once used my closet and I have a shelf that was like at around 6 foot off the floor, I put my mono tubs in the closet on a home made wooden rack that kept them 2 feet of the ground, I then purchased a small fan from walmart that would oscillate back and forth, I placed in on the 6 foot shelf and set it to oscillate and it would just sit there all do blowing back and forth.  Worked very well.

The big thing is you will need to experiment and see what works best for you in your situation.  Just don't have the fan to close or pointing directly at the tubs cause then you will dry them out.
