Inoculation - Why inject only at the sides?
    #1206125 - 01/10/03 04:46 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I can't find an explanation as to why the injecting of spores should be done at the sides of a jar/container. Surely if the substrate container is big enough (like grow kit size) you should be able also inject in the midle, to create a bigger flush.
Anyone know the reason?

Not sure...but I know you can inject in the middle, or anywhere, with no problems. I think that visible colonization just comes easier when it's inoc'd from the side.

Its mainly because the spore solution can reach a greater area of substrate surface.  If you just did it in the middle, it would only get that little spot, and get only growth there. With the larger surface area, you get more growth in a larger area.

Plus its easier to see how your growth is going

When you inject at the side of the jar, the liquid runs down the wall of the jar. This gets some of the spores deeper into your substrate.

But it wouldn't be a problem if I injected in the middle as well as the sides?

Sounds like you might have a slightly better chance to clog the syringe if you stick it in the middle, but this isn't a big problem, just a mild inconvenience while you fix it.

I always inject in the middle as well as the sides a la "5 hole method" which I personally find speeds up colonization time as you don't have to wait another week after the outside colonizes.

Thanks Froggy, I will do the same I think. I noticed my grow kit never flushes from the middle, seems like a waste to me. I will be popping my 'growing from scratch' cherry this weekend, so I will try the 5 hole method.
Thanks for your opinions guys

Here's an old pic I found which shows the innergrowth coming through from the 5th middle innoc point...it's definately faster
