wax paper question
    #8068149 - 02/25/08 10:36 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

I have a few uncased trays that have been in the fc for 4 or 5 days and the humidity could be a little higher. I heard RR say that you have to use wax paper from the very beginning with cased substrates or it will favor contaminate growth. Do you HAVE to use wax paper from the beginning with uncased substrates too? Should I go remove it immediately?

thankyou

What I have said is not to wait a week before using wax paper or it could stimulate the germination of contaminant spores that have landed. If you use it from the start, those contaminant spores will have mostly landed on the surface of the wax paper, which is discarded every two to three days. After four or five days, you can simply wash the surface of your substrate very well under the water faucet to rinse off most of the contaminant spores that have landed.

Wax paper simply helps to hold a high humidity at the pinning surface. It's even more effective with uncased substrates than with cased.

I know this an old thread but ...I was pondering on alternatives this morning having discovered the cupboards were lacking in wax paper of any description when I thought of the post valentines rose wrapper in my kitchen. It's made of clear cellophane and let's light 100% of light through. I cut it into shape, cleaned it and placed on my casing, which has pins everywhere but on top. I'm thinking this will work and may even be an improvement being completely transparant and 100% synthetic therefore eliminating any slight contam risk and not getting soggy and needing replacing. Only concern is air exchange but I can't imagine wax paper is massively more permeable, Is it?

Not sure but you scrunch up the wax paper then unfold it so you have room for air to circulate well thats what i did any way.
:geicogecko:

And it works very well. Why dont you just go to a shop and buy some it doesnt cost much .
