spawn or sub yeild
    #12031483 - 02/15/10 12:03 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

i was wondering if a high yeild came from more spawn or if it came from more substrate.

Example
lets say i had 10 jars of wbs that filled a depth of 3 inches in a  tub with only 5 quarts of coir substrate

then i had the same tub beside it which i  had the opposite. 10 quarts of coir sub to 5 quarts of wbs spawn.

Which one would yeild more or will it be the exact same?

actually im betting on the 10 qurts of coir, i believe it will hold more water, and we all know shrooms are 90 percent water.

Grains contain a lot more nutrients, than coir, while coir is able to hold a lot more water.
A higher spawn ratio will lead to faster colonization of the substrate.

In the end it would be a lot more clever to use a spawn/substrate ratio of 1:2 (in this case), because you can simply use the other 5 quarts of spawn to use them for knocking up more coir, which would double the amount of substrate. Using a ratio of 2:1 (spawn/substrate) is nothing but a waste of spawn.

regardless of a faster colinziation period
regardless of being clever or not lol (obviously knocking up more sub in more tubs would be the smart thing to do with all that spawn) REGARDLESS OF THAT lol.

2:1 (spawn:sub)
2:1 (sub:spawn)

this would not be the same thing? Hypothetically if you didnt have another tub to spawn knock up more coir. which tub would have a larger yeild?

im thinking its a trick question and its equal

like stated, grain does not hold water well at all, and mushrooms are 90 percent water, so more spawn then sub would have lesser yeild in my opinion..

but it has more nutrients...it will absorb water from the low sub

ya, I'm in the same boat. i have been working on spawn. but i don't have the experience, to crack this question. but i have pondered this same question, and it would be exciting to understand. i really enjoy these thinking, kind of threads.

I can't really tell what's better.
As long as enough water is provided by misting etc. the 2:1 spawn/sub ratio might be the better solution.
I've never tried it.

Nutritious additives, such as gypsum or coffee grounds have proven to increase the yield. Therefore it's likely, that a spawn ratio of 2:1 would yield better than the other way around.

However, my personal experience with cased straight grains (and the casing layer does nothing but to add moisture to the "enormous" amount of spawn (which is the substrate here)) have shown way less good results, than even small amounts of spawn I used to knock up bulk subs.
This is where experience and speculation divide.

That's pretty much all I can say about it.

There's many reasons why this question is unnecessary, which is probably why few or maybe no one has actually tested it yet. At least I couldn't find or remember anything.

Maybe someone else is able to tell anything about it. There's a good chance i left out several factors when I thought about it:shrug:

wel its necessary to me because i have 8 jars of wbs to one tub and i was told to do two tubs because i would increase my yeild.

it brought me to that question because if i were to do two tubs i would divide my spawn ratio in half which obviously means a lower spawn ratio but i was told i would have a bigger yeild rather than a high spawn ratio in one tub which i was told is an overkill.

i only have room for one tub so im still doing 8 jars spawned to roughly 9-10 quarts of coir/verm/gypsum/coffee

nutrients are most important in larger yeilds is that what ur saying fahkface?

Theoretically yes, practically no. Honestly, I have no concrete answer to your question. I've never done it in this particular way and have never seen anyone else doing it. I see why you ask, if you have only space for one tub.

In the end, however, your yield would be much better if you'd do more than one tub.

Maybe you could stack two tubs on top of each other!?!

Yeah, the reason you'd be getting more from the divide is obvious, more surface area to work with and I'd really consider doing two, even three tubs with 1 inch of spawn each, just me though

When you say one inch of spawn, it sounds, like you cover your spawn with the substrate, waiting for it to get colonized from bottom to top.
If this is how you do it, you should probably consider to actually mix the spawn and the substrate, which will speed up the colonization time.

Oh I know, I was just describing it as such for visual effect...wouldn't make sense not to mix:smile:
