Kansas Governor outlaws salvia

Governor outlaws salvia
April 26, 2008 - cjonline.com

Kansas has joined a growing list of states to outlaw an old hallucinogenic drug called salvia divinorum.

With Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' signature earlier this week, Kansas became one of at least nine states to place restrictions on the drug. Nearly 20 other states are considering similar legislation.

The broad leaf is often used by landscapers as ground cover, but its concentrated extract can be chewed or smoked to feel its effects. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, salvia causes hallucinations, a perception of overlapping realities, dizziness and impaired speech. It has long been legal in the United States and used in shamanistic rituals by groups in southern Mexico.

But it was mentioned as one of many factors in the suicide of a Delaware teenager in 2006, and states soon took notice of the drug.

Tom Stanton, president of the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association, said he came to the issue after hearing of the Delaware death and viewing Internet videos of teenagers giggling and tripping around while on the hallucinogen.

He couldn't provide any numbers on the drug's prevalence, but said the videos he watched were enough evidence to convince him of the law's merits.

But Jon Sloan, owner of Persephones Journey in Lawrence where the substance was sold, said the ill behavior of some kids on the Internet isn't reason to ban the substance across the state.

He also said salvia could prove to have medicinal effects.

Thomas Prisinzano, a medicinal chemistry professor at The University of Kansas, has participated in studies on salvinorum A, the psychoactive chemical compound found in salvia. He said in the past that the drug may be used for treatment of pain and possibly depression and Alzheimer's disease.

There have been few comprehensive studies of the drug's short-term and long-term effects on the brain, however, and Stanton said the state shouldn't take any risks with it.

With the governor's signature, possession, use or sale of salvia is illegal.

The salvia scourge has been around for millenium. Now maybe mankind can break free of the destructive green chains of this evil plant.

Can I get an amen?

Amen bro! The evilness of this plant has possessed its users for a millennia. Imagine how much safer we will be when its use is prohibited. We'll never have reason to challenge reality again!

How about you put a minimum age on it... say 18 , or considering American are supposed to reach maturity later , 21 ? No more irresponsible and child use! If I can get drunk and still have access to my car at 21 , why can't I trip for 10 minutes...

All these states banning Salvia is very disappointing.  I tried it once but not again.  lol.  and from what i have read this isn't too uncommon.  Apparently a lot of people try it and don't like it so they dont do it again.  Anyway, this is more disappointing news.  :frown:

 it can be dangerous, but users recognize this and avoid situations where people can get hurt. you cant say the same thing for alcohol. this disappoints me

I almost want to try it, just because they are making it illegal. However I don't think I would like it. The videos I have seen make it look way to incapacitating.

My point is that I would venture to guess that experimenting with this drug will actually increase once it is fully outlawed. Making it a forbidden fruit.

Laws that try to protect people from themselves are pointless, and in many cases cause the exact behaviors they are trying to stop.

--------------------
The bottom line is if we can't trust what they tell us, we have to figure it out for ourselves.

The blatant dishonesty of it all is what really turns my stomach.

Well maybe with it's prohibition these damn irresponsible kids will stop using this extremely dangerous, LSD-like substance, because banning something always reduces use.

Right?

I just left a pretty scathing voice-mail at her office and sent an equally stern email.

The bad thing is she isn't up for reelection due to term limits.

I doubt she will even respond. As a Kansan, I used to support her administration -- back stabbing scum bag politicians.

The day they are all strung up by their fucking guts will be glorious indeed.

You're forgetting that alcohol boosts are economy by oh so much money. It's alllll about the $$$$$$. Logic plays no part in it.

What I find hilarious is that doctors and such need tobacco companies to continue to exist because the taxes on cigarettes pay for the Anti-Smoking ads. It's just a big circle.

We will never see any logic applied because of money and how alcohol prohibition turned out. I still don't get why they assumed it would work the next time and how alcohol and tobacco aren't considered drugs.

Yes, oh thank GOD in Heaven for the Einsteinian wisdom and scorching intellect of the Governor of Kansas. Blessed are we who no longer have to endure the evil roaming and pillaging of the Salvia possessed herds in Kansas. Imagine trying to survive Kansas had they not acted SOON! These possessed masses of psychotic herbheads probably would have destroyed many. Good going Kathlene! Just think, now your friends in the prison-for-profit business can breathe easy knowing there's ONE MORE WAY to make sure they have fresh slave labor to keep their stock prices in bull territory! IN FACT, I SAY WE CHECK INSIDER TRADING IN THOSE SECURITIES...think there's a chance maybe a lobbyist saw a quick way to raise certain securities prices? (oh well, guess I'll just have to look that up and let EVERYONE KNOW if she's either a board member or a shareholder) I'm sure she wont mind, since everyone knows the humanity she is saving from CERTAIN RUIN!

(ANGER...HOSTILITY TOWARDS THE OPPOSITION)

I just checked her web page, in addition to the ban on Salvia they have also endeavored to criminalize Datura Stramonium.

So two more illegal plants in Kansas, one of which is native to the region and grows everywhere.

Another pointless letter and phone call will have to be made. Datura grows all over my property... what... am I supposed to spray now?

No... because this is a fucking pointless law.
