Yes, just pay very close attention when it comes to the simmer step, millet bursts pretty easily.

That's absolutely true. It bursts easily. But you're at an advantage here over the usual mixed birdseed you find. If you're using a mix, you tend to wind up either getting the millet right and underhydrating the other grains (like milo) or getting the milo and wheat right and bursting the millet.

Check RR's tek out. This should work well, but with MUCH shorter simmer. Instead of bringing them to a simmer, I'd dump the soaked and strained millet into already boiling water and quickly "blanch" them.

from what ive been told millet you dont even have to simmer, just rinse with real hot water and soak for 24 hours, then rinse again with hot water and it'll be at field capacity..dont know for myself though wish i could find straight millet would be so much easier..

More than "OK" many people love it. I remember a thread a couple months back where Roadkill called millet "my favorite".

That could be, and would sure make things easier. I recently sourced some WBS that's all millet with a few sunflower seeds, which float and can be skimmed. I look forward to giving it a go.

Ya, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of dirt and debree in here. I think i will rinse anyway and soak for 24hrs. Then instead of simmer i'll just soak/rinse in hot tap water and then dry.

Sounds like a good "Plan A"
Let us know how it goes

edit:
Another plus is that the small grain size can give you a ton of inoculation points.

You should add some gypsum because it will clump and can be hard to break up. Also id do a final rinse with boiling water so it will steam dry faster.

Good advice, that's the same logic as when I recommended blanching instead of simmering. I add gypsum to the both the soak and the blanch water. (thanks to Doc T for the blanch idea)

Does gypsum add nutrients to it as well or something?

Yes, calcium and sulfur.

For a seven qt. batch? About a TBS. So a pinch per jar.

i have recently started my first grow in a couple of years, I`m still pretty much a noob :p

I used all millet simmered for 25mins with a teaspoon of gypsum and a teaspoon of instant coffee.  The jars are nearly 100% colonized after 8 days.

The main thing is to keep a good eye on the millet when simmering, watch for bursting grains.  Millet is looking good to me so far!

Every time I use millet I wind up bursting them, even when I am REALLY gentle and careful with the simmer, they come out of the PC all burst and glued together.

Other times I've skipped the simmer, or just barely heated them up, but then the millet is still hard and small, definitely not very hydrated.

Still work fine and colonize fast in both cases, but I just have had a hell of a time getting the water content right.
