fact or fiction
    #12045248 - 02/17/10 08:00 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I watched a youtube video this morning and the guy had a bag full of colonized plugs that he paid for. Are these plugs sold online and if so does anyone know the name or have a link?

You can buy plugs colonized with legal species, not magic ones. Not in the US, anyway.

Well... I guess your first step is to use the search engine: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
Find the species you are looking to grow, and then read how people have done it.

Most of the species that require wood tend to be a bit harder to grow- I hope this isn't your first time?

first time...yes. This is why I'm asking questions. I would like to have or make some and put 4 in each corner of wet/cold cardboard inside a tub and place it in nature for a few months and see how well it takes how like it did in the youtube video.

That can be done- but you'll have better luck with Ps cubensis or one of the sclerotia forming species. IMO.

all I know is this guy had a bag full of pure white colonized plugs. he took a tub, broke up cardboard and placed a plug in each corner. he covered them with more cardboard and then put the lid back on about 90% of the way and stuck them outside. He waited I think 3-4 months and when he came back he had about 4-6 inches of white gold and just cut the cardboard out into little blocks and did his thing. Looked like it worked fine for him.I will watch the video again if I can find it and just HOPE :obama:

Watch the first several videos here: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/ and see what you think about that.

Just do the PF Tek or jump right into WBS>monotub or something similar, if you can pay attention to detail and do your homework that is. I think I first time grower could do WBS>mono as long as they don't cut corners. I would stick with these methods as they are the standard and you will find a wealth of information.

Let's set things straight here.  What kind of mushroom are you trying to grow?  Psilocybes?  If so, what kind of psilocybes?  As was said, wood lovers, as you seem to have seen a video of, take a great deal more patience to grow than dung lovers.  If you want the easiest and most straight forward species to grow, P. Cubensis is it.  If you're willing to take some time and wait until fall to see any fruits (I hope you live in an area that has cooler falls.) then give wood lovers a shot.  Here's a link on how to do both:

Cubes: http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek
Woodlovers:  http://www.fungifun.org/English/Psilocybe-Azurescens-Outdoor-Cultivation

You can, however, get grain spawn bags pre-sterilized and spore syringes pre-prepared, (http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Three-Pound-Organic-Rye-Berry-Spawn-Starter-Kits-by-Everything-M-p-16244.html) which once fully colonized can then be used to inoculate woodchips, which are easy enough to find and prepare on your own.

If you're new to this whole thing though, I would stick to cubensis.
