Crazy/stupid idea

Just had a crazy/stupid thought. With the recent discussion that took place in leopardmans thread regarding injecting moisture and creating vermiculite reservoirs in cakes, I got to thinking. Instead of altering the cakes in some way, what if you just had little plates filled with water that the cakes could drink from as they see fit? Then I kept thinking and remembered that some people use straight water with an air rock on the bottom of their fruiting chambers to humidify instead of perlite. So here's what I propose:
What if one was to just fill the bottom of a fruiting chamber with about an eighth to a quarter inch of water, and then put the cakes in this water? I know many people have said that it could lead to bacterial growth and things like that, but would it really be that big of a deal? Has anyone ever seen a bacterial infection as a result of standing water? As long as there is an air rock there to keep things circulating, I think it would be fine. If this works, not only would it improve flush results, but it would eliminate the need to keep buying perlite for an eternity. A variation on this for bulk could be to take a tray that is roughly the size of the fruiting chamber, and once the tray is fully colonized, poke holes in the bottom of the tray and place the tray in the water.
Thoughts? I know I'm gonna get some serious criticism for this, so please don't hesitate to hit me with your worst.

Well, you already knew about the bacterial growth, which is most likely worse than you think.
I'd say leave a cup of water standing for about 10 days and tell us how nasty it is.
Not to mention you don't want to overhydrate a cake. Imagine leaving myc in water for 7 days, it would turn to mush.

What if you put a small enough amount of water that it would either be absorbed by the mycelium or evaporated after a day or two?

What about those watering bulbs ya see on TV? Just stick it in the substrate and walk away? Anyone ever tried these?

I like your idea but I don't think it will work. The way I see it cubes are not aquatic species and for some reason they like to be refreshed gradually. They like rains, not lakes or rivers. But, hey, mushrooms are a living mystery and I love seeing people try new things.

Good idea. Do they make cake sized ones? I know people have used straws as reservoirs, so these would just be a way more expensive version of a straw. Would definitely work though if it's the right size.

We should teach the fungus to drink from these:

Part of the reason we do things the way we do is because cakes don't want to fruit if they're soaking in water. "Evaporation of water from the cake is a major pinning trigger," you've probably heard this a bunch of times.
I just don't know if they'll fruit while half-dunking half-evaporating, but try it on a cake or two in its own container and let us know what happens.

Come on badman... He knows that. He's just trying to think different and we love that, don't we?
