Jar lids

I never taped my jar lids to the the part of the lid that you screw on. Will this prevent some gas exchange? I have all of them loose anyways.

you don't want to tape your lids down, you should have holes in the lids of your BRf to allow gas exchange and tighten the lids

i don't have any holes in my lids. I inoculated the jars without holes. Is there a safe way i can put holes into the lids without risking contamination at this point?

Are the holes absolutely necessary?

did you just like take your lids off to inoculate them? You are really going to need atleast 1 hole in the lid to allow for gas exchange or else your cake will most likely stall.

If it is BRf that you are doing and you have no inoculation ports then how did you go about inoculating? If you opened the lid, then you could be fucked from the getgo..
You need to add 4 holes to the lids close to the edge, so that you can inject your spores against the glass on 4 sides. You also need the holes for GE.

Check out my BRF lids and try pull this off next time using cotton balls, buffer sponges or polyfill.

I opened the lid quick and inoculated them. It was in a pretty sterile environment so i'm honestly not too worried. And yes these are BRF jars, 1 pint ones. If i were to sterilize a nail pretty good do you think i could get at least a hole in the jar without risking contam?

Do you have a verm layer on the top and you just inoculated through that layer, into the cake? If so, you could probably flame a nail and put a few holes, then just wipe with alcohol and cover holes with really porous med tape and you should be fine, so long as the conditions were really sterile.

Yeah i have a dry layer of verm on top. I'll have to give that a shot. But why would i want to cover the hole with tape if its needed for the gas exchange?

Like I said, you want microporous medical tape, the cloth kind, so as to add a little extra layer of protection, although it's not necessary. To be honest I hate the use of verm and all that in BRF, so I couldn't say that any of it is a good idea, but I'm not nocking what you're doing and I hope that whatever you choose to do works out your benefit.

alright, i have one good hole in all my jars. Thanks for all the advice. I don't have access to that tape, so they are just left open in a sterile area.

Wish me luck and thanks again!
