Finally got my martha all completed - How to build a martha tek * 2
    #11818019 - 01/12/10 08:24 PM (15 years, 7 days ago)

I have been working on getting some spawn together and start growing some mushrooms again. I'm mainly going to be doing Pearl oyster mushrooms and I just nocced up some reishi today so I'll be doing a bit of those also.

But anyways I just wanted to share my martha greenhouse thingy that I just finished building today In case anyone needs some help or a guide to build one.

I'll start off with a list of all the supplies that I used and where I got them.

- 4 tier wire storage rack from walmart  product link

- 9 ft X 12 ft 4 mil thick plastic sheet. Walmart Found in the paint aisle to cover floors.

- 4 3/4" 90* slip pvc joints
- 1 10ft 3/4" pvc pipe
- Zip ties
- Stick on velcro

First of all I assembled the shelves from the store. Instead of putting the top shelf on the very top I put it down about 6 inches from the top because I didn't want to waste the top shelf on nothing since it was going to be covered in a tarp.

Next I got the plastic tarp out and cut it to size. My shelves are 36 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 54 inches tall. So I added up all the needed widths and lengths to figure out how to cut the plastic.

I needed 68 inches tall and 64 inches wide to cover the shelves. I then added about 5 inches onto those measurements so the sheet would be long enough to wrap around the poles.

So here is where the pvc piping comes into place. Since I didn't put the top shelf on the very top I needed something to hold the plastic in place and to make a roof. also to add a little bit of height over the top shelf I had in place. I cut 2 sections probably around 34" long and attached my 90* joints to the ends of the pipe sections and place it on top of the 4 poles sticking out of the top. So now I had a roof on my greenhouse.

Next we put the plastic that we already cut earlier onto the shelves. I started with the sides because I was going to be doing a little bit of folding for the top bit. So we begin by just draping the plastic over it. I wrapped it around the pole at the bottom and poked a hole through the plastic and put a zip tie through it and pulled it tight. I did that on both sides. Then I moved up to the top right above the top shelf and wrapped the plastic around the pole and poked a hole and put the tip ties through again on both sides. On the top I took the ends and folded them in towards the middle and lined everything up so it was neat then put 2 zip ties on the top towards the ends.

So now it is pretty much done and all it needs is a front cover. Cut a seperate piece of plastic sheet to fit over the front. I cut it a little big so it would hang over the edges a tad bit. Then I got my velcro out. It is the kind with sticky backs so it just sticks onto pretty much anything. I cut out 4 pieces and put two on the top towards the edges and then 1 on each side around the middle. I then peeled off the wax paper covering the stickyness 1 by 1 for the side that was going to attach to the outside cover and hung up the door.

Here is a final picture of my finished martha greenhouse without the front door attached but you can see the velcro pieces where it attaches.

Thanks to nooobie for helpin me out with this a little

Haha ya. They were only a buck each so I couldn't resist. I was planning on using some thin gallon size food storage bags to line them so I can choose where to have holes because I thought the container had a tad too many.

It would be cool to make straw baskets out of.

I just wanted to update this post since I think I have it finished now. I might need to make some adjustments and if so I'll post it in here. I got my fogger and fan setup finally. It Should take care of all fresh air and humidity needs.

This is overall what it looks like.

It is basically a 10 gallon tote with a mini pc type squirrel cage blower and a pond fogger.

Here is what I used

http://www.mainlandmart.com/foggers.html
I used the first fogger on that page and along with that I got the float thats made for that fogger and a also got the mist controller that controls how much mist the fogger makes.

and then this is the fan that I got
http://skycraftsurplus.com/12vdcsquirrelcagebrushlessfan.aspx

To hook the fan up to power a got an ac to dc power supply that has a 4 pin molex connector on the end.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MGG6SC/ref=oss_T15_product

I also wanted to be able to control the speed of the fan so I got this fan speed controller
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PNFEM4/ref=oss_T15_product

So I just cut a rectangle into the lid that would fit the output of the fan and I used some super adhesive sealant to glue it in and make sure it was completely sealed.

To route the air flow into the martha I used pvc pipe because its really cheap. I used 1.5" pvc pipe along with a 90* joint. To connect it into the lid I got this piece that has a 1.5" slip opening for the pipe and then on the other end it has threads on it. So I put a hole in the lid that was a bit tight then I kind of forcefully screwed the little adapter piece into the lid.

I ended up routing the cable for the fogger up through the pvc because It makes a lot more fog if the fogger is directly below the output hole. Otherwise the water and fog tends to just condense on the lid of the tote and drip back down into the water supply. So having the cable go through there keeps the fogger right under the output.

I'm not sure if I covered everything but if you have any questions I'll try to answer them.

not much really for the actual shelves and everything. The humidifier went way over budget though. It works really well though and the water reservoir lasts forever so I don't have to refill it all the time.

Nice job! I would be concerned about FAE that blower only puts out 28cfm. My computer fan puts out 110cfm.  Your probably gonna need a bigger fan or blower on there. That's not enough FAE for cubes and if your growing oysters its definitely not enough, they require crazy amounts of FAE.

Do you care to post a link or something to exactly what fan you are using?

It seems like this fan puts out enough air for the size of the martha though. but I dunno. My results have been nice enough it seems. And my fan controller has 2 connections for fans. I could easily enough add another fan into the lid. The only thing though is even when I turn just this one fan onto full blast the stream of fog/mist greatly thins out as if the fogger doesn't create enough fog to completely fog how much air is being pushed through.

I'm using a vick's ultra sonic humidifer plus a shotgun martha for FAE. Oyster's will not grow right without good FAE. You'll be ok if you add a cool mist and plumb that in, that would be enough FAE. I start my oysters inside and then move them outside. Even with the setup Im running my oysters do so much better outside.

what so do you keep the vicks on the in side, and then all you do is have a bunch of holes in the plastic cover?

I mean I already have a humidifier being plumbed into the martha from outside it. so what difference would it make to go buy a cool mist and plumb that in instead of what I already have.

The martha is only 15 cubic feet. and my fan does about double that per minute. I know the tubing and tub will take off a good bit of the cfm of the fan but i will get atleast 6-7 air exchanges per hour im guessing to be the low end.

I run the vicks on the outside and plumb it into the martha. Yes the martha has holes all over it.

Here's how I did mine:
