Spent Mycelium on Rye in the worm bin?
    #11936595 - 01/31/10 04:09 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I was unsure where to post this, but whatever. I have a question for anyone who has worm bins. Do you ever put your spent mycelium into your worm bin? I have some spent rye that I would like to make the most of. Can worms handle any metabolites? Thanks in advance

:1up:

Well, if there's no available data... there's only one thing left to do. Here goes.

SUCCESS! It seems to be working, they like it. I spotted worm holes through the mycelium (which is growing together again.) There's also many more casting on the top layers of the bucket than before. There also seems to be some new knotting going on  . I think the worm bin is getting ready to fruit!. I have straw, horse manure, spent coffee grounds and some dried and powdered egg shells in the bucket. Of course the worms are also there.

I guess I should say that I emptied spent mycelium from different cultures on top of the other ingredients in the bin. The mycelium has grown together and formed a semi-permeable layer on top. I mist the mycelium with a fine mist once or twice a day then I place moist newspaper on top to trap as much moisture as possible. I'll take some pics of the knotting later, I have to go grocery shopping first.

Caio!

I've been throwing contaminated or broken jars in the worm bin with great success.  The oyster mycelium is definitely spreading.  I have a three tiered bin, and the bottom tier is now colonizing with oysters!  The worms seem to love it too.

Nice! So it seems oyster mycelium and cube's are good for worms. I use a bait bucket with a perforated top for my bin. I just started it about a month ago. I used fisherman's worms, not sure what type they are but they are eating everything I put into the bucket so I assume Eisenia foetida, they are red.

Not the jars, just the contents of the jars.

Here's a picture of some Oyster mycelium:
