Casing Problems
    #1204036 - 01/09/03 12:55 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

About 2 weeks ago, i created a straight verm EQ casing w/ 2 cakes. I've been spaying daily, and I am sure there isn't too much water. It is in my incubator and theres no mycelium growing through. There is some that came up to right under the verm, but none broke through. Any ideas?

IF you have it covered with foil with some small holes poked through, sitting in a nice dark warm incubator, it should have been fine.

What interests me is why you were misting it everyday? You will not need to mist if its covered and in an incubator....the moisture is held in by the cover. Colonization needs low amounts of oxygen, and opening it everyday to mist probably introduced too much oxygen, stalling the colonization.

Just let it be in your incubator for a few more days....let it sit though.

So, should the foil be airtight, or should I poke holes through it, because I don't want all the moisture to evaporate?

Your casing layer may be to thick, try scraping a little off. 2 wks and no growth is way to long. Usually my casings break through overnight, when using a 1/4-1/2 inch layer. It also maybe to wet...

if you use foil it won't be airtight either way. Foil doesn't seal airtight, therefore poking holes in the foil is not necessary.

Ya just use saran wrap so you wont be opening it and checking on it all the time...if you do poke a few holes in it..allthough its not necessary it may help, i've never done it...just read it
