Rooting Loph's
    #12039811 - 02/16/10 02:52 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I was thinking about ordering another peyote to craft on to my san pedro. I wanted to root it first to see if it would grow new pups after I took the cutting.

How long does it take to fully root before I can take a graft and possibly expect pups to appear?

i would wait an entire season if you plan on doing this. they take a while to root and have significant root mass at years end. so just think about it.

you could always just graft it right out the box then wait for it to pup. then you could root those pups. thats seems like a more feasable idea.

Sorry I haven't chimed in much here.

Your plants will be coming fully rooted yes?

If so I'd wait AT LEAST a season (spring) before cutting for a graft, although the longer you wait the more established the roots will be, thus the more likely it will be to throw out pups sooner.

Like f_h said too, grafts tend to throw out numerous pups eventually as all that excess energy has to go somewhere

Is this your first time grafting?

If so I'd try with something a little less valuable.

Seedlings, gymnos, mamms, and such are all good places to start.

Yeah, I've never grafted anything before. A practice might be a good start opposed to hacking my precious cacti up.

growing from seed solves this problem. if you fail at one graft you'll have more anyways. although i try not to fail but it has happend about 2or3 times before. i never lost the graft thought. i just rerooted it.
