well these jars have WBS in them and are full of white gold the problem is when I went over to the house to see them in person the smell almost knocked me off my feet! What do YOU think...are the jars ok because they have lots of good solid white or should they be pitched because of the strong nasty smell they have from the jars? I would hate to see anyone get sick down the road so everyones 2 cents please,Thanks

If it's "lots of solid white gold" and not "all solid white gold", it can well be, that the uncolonized parts of the substrate are contaminated with bacteria (which regularly develops are disgusting smell).
It's definitely not a good sign!

the wbs is rotting from bacteria. the mycelium wont colonize rotting wbs. i have successfully spawned partially colonized wbs jars. but the ones i'm speaking of didn't have bacteria or an odor. if you are going to attempt to spawn them make sure you remove the uncolonized wbs.

I used to like the smell, then I got horrible nausea from a trip once. Now the smell alone makes me gag =( lol. Ive been eating my shroomies in buckeyes (chocalate and peanut butter balls) ever since that happened =P Completely kills the nausea too.

For the record, I've had some half colonized BRF jars that had too much water in them that got that bacteria smell, a few of them I absolutely had to dump, but a couple of them recovered and fully colonized and the smell went away. They were perfectly healthy productive cakes.
So - use your best judgement, but if they smell that strongly, its probably a lost cause.

didnt you say "jars"?
what if it's only one jar causing the smell. seperate them and re-check.

Mushroom mycelium is actually used to kill certain bacterias...
