Raising RH outside Shotgun terrarium
    #12038228 - 02/16/10 03:27 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all,

Decided to give the mushrooms another chance after my failed attempt last year... I have about 2 qt of colonized wbs, and I want to spawn them to coir with coffee and verm or something, not shure yet.
Anyway, my question is about the fruiting chamber. I want to fruit them in a shotgun, I like to keep things easy=) But It's winter here in Holland and the humidity just doesn't get above 25-30%. I've read I should run a humidifier in my room when using a SGFC with that RH, but I don't have one and don't want one.

Do you think I could solve the problem by placing some open trays with damp perlite under and around the FC, so all the air surrounding and getting into the terrarium will be a bit more humid? Or should I try something else?

Thanks in advance!

There's no need to raise the RH around your terrarium!
It's the perlite's job inside the FC to maintain a proper RH, which it will do, as long as enough damp perlite is in there.

The RH in the rooms I grow in isn't higher than the one in yours. There isn't a problem with it.
The water that evaporates from the perlite and gets lost can simply be refilled every other day.

Well that's good news!=) And I suppose replacing that lost water is done by misting it?

Im using extra humidifier in grow room at winter times because of heating. I think it helps few % in big greenhouses.

It's winter here in Colorado, and the air is dry.
If you run a humidifier in your home (maybe on a timer) you will feel more comfortable and warmer and your shogun will work better too.
So it's worth considering.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

It is indeed healthier for you.
In terms of mushroom cultivation it isn't necessary though. A higher RH in the room the FC is standing in surely keep the perlite from losing too much water to the air, surrounding the FC, but this can easily be compensated by misting or re-hydrating the perlite once in a while.

Misting is done in order to replace the water that evaporated from the substrate, not from the perlite. Excessively misting the perlite can be done, though.
I prefer to re-hydrate it, by giving it a short rinse.
It's up to you what you want to do.

If the overall RH in your place is that low, investing in a humidifier could be indeed a good idea, though!
The same effect can be achieved without buying anything but simply by putting a tray of water on a radiator. Plants are working as well.
