exposed grains

Here is the deal, I have made a tray spawning colonized rye berries to my own homemade sub and it is colonizing nicely. Here is my question, there are a few pathches on the top of the tray that did not get covered by the sub because I didn't layer the whole thing very well. My question is are these areas at risk to becoming contaminated when induced into fruiting conditions because the grains are exposed and more vulnerable?
I don't know if I want to case it because I have had plenty of failures in this area and I don't wanna mess it up if I have already come so far. Does anybody have any iadvice or ideas to help me? Thanks.

It should be fine. I've had trays colonize with exposed grain.

yeah, i dont see why it would put you at any more risk as long as the grain is 100% colonized... when i spawn to bulk i just mix the spawn evenly with the bulk sub so some grains end up on the surface...it never seemed to attract contams or anything.

cool, I will probably just leave it alone then. It won't fruit where the grains are on the surface correct because grains can't fruit on there own, that is why you have to spawn them?

If it's cubes grain are poor fruiters unless its rye which does ok. It can fruit on its own but it's best to spawn to bulk. Also the grains provide a big portion of the nutrition for the fruits when it's spawned to bulk.
Either way the grains are part of a bigger mass of substrate so it shouldn't fruit until it's fully colonized.
Good luck!

Yeah it is cubes. As I was assembling the tray the grain spawn went much further than I expected and I ran out of substrate to fully cover the last layer of spawn. It is only maybe a few square inches that are exposed, I am glad to hear that everything will be okay though.

Ever hear about ohmatics tub setup? He uses a frosting layer with lots of exposed grains. Mayb that helps you. Search for his name with monotub in the search box.

You shouldn't go ballistic at leaving a few exposed grains, but when you shake up the jars when spawning, you're knocking the mycelium off the grains and it'll have to recover. Competitor mold spores could then land on these damaged kernels and contaminate your grow. I've always followed the school of thought that frosting layers are a bad practice.

This is what I was thinking, I was also worried that when I did finally induce fruiting that the exposed areas, even though fully colonized, would be particularly vulnerable purely because the grains are so nutritious and maybe some mold spores would muscle there way in there some how, sounds dumb I know. Anyways, the tray is about 75% colonized now and all the exposed areas are fully covered. Thanks for all the help and advice.
