Do i need hole in bucket?

Hey, i am going to pasteurize my substrate in a bucket following the tek on this page. I am confused about the hole in the bucket. Don't i need to keep the temp steady. It seems to me that the hole would allow heat to escape. It also looks like he has a black trash bag over the bucket at one point, but does not describe this step. A little clarification anyone?

you didn't post any sort of tek that you are supposedly following. It would help if we knew what you were talking about.

1. you didnt post a link to the tek youre using.
2. what kind of bulk sub you using? if its coir all you have to do is put the brick and any additives in a paint bucket, dump a gallon (thereabout) of boiling water into the bucket, cover, and let it sit till it cools, mixing every once in a while until consistent. no holes in the bucket required
edit: 3. and you shouldnt bump just because someone hasnt replied to your post in under 30 min

I just looked at one of your many threads on the first page of this forum and it would appear that he is using coir. If so just do what mope said. I haven't really found a need to pasteurize it in the same way you would with other substrates like manure.

i found out the hard way it is best to have a small hole in the lid, along with polyfil or tyvek covering because when you put the top on the hot bucket it will cause a vacum effect...
