Does everything look alright here?
    #12033235 - 02/15/10 11:21 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hey, so i started seeing a few little mushrooms popping up a few days ago!!
This is my first time, and i was wondering if i started the fruiting stage too early? The reason why i'm asking is because there's already about 6 or 7 small ones starting and the myc isn't even totally visible over the soil.
I'm not sure if anyone has even used this method with the soil, but i bought a kit and just followed the instructions.
It came with a clear plastic dome lid which i also took a picture of. I cut two *small* holes on the top of it today because i heard that they need oxygen in order to grow. Was this a bad idea?
Also, it said i should be keeping light on it (25W max) for 12 hours a day. Do you think i should be following this?
Sorry for all the noob questions

Your sub looks extremely damp, but the mushrooms seem to like it, I cant really tell from the pics though...

I guess it will colonize while your sides produce?

i'm not familiar with grow kits, but i doubt that that top layer is supposed to be a casing layer, in which case you initiated fruiting too early.  should have waited for the myc to completely colonize the substrate... should just look like a big white block.

it was good to put the holes in, but i would have made them maybe 1.5 inches diameter and put two on each long side of the dome. you should fill them with polyfil so you dont loose to much moisture

go get a CFL in the 6500k spectrum for lighting

What did you use for bulk?  All I hear is soil.  No hpoo or coir?
If thats a casing layer it doesnt look like its run through completely.

dam :frown:
do you think they will still grow normally if i started fruiting too early?
I'll explain the process i took to get here (sorry if some of my terminology is off)
I had the mycellum in a jar with something that looked like oats and it basically looked like a big rice crispy square...
I added it to what looked like hay and let it sit in the dark for about 12 days. Through this time my mycellum came through for hay and formed a white layer above. I then added the soil ontop, kept it in the dark for 5 days and then began fruiting.

you dont really need a casing for cubes but you have one.  Thats the layer of soil on top of the colonized sub.  You should have given it a little more time to "run" colonize the soil before adding light and dropoping temp.  If the sides colonize faster than the rest then patch the white spots so the rest can catch up.
Already fruiting though, just go with it, youll still get a yeild for sure, it just may not all come at the same time.

so that dirt is actually a casing layer then. That looks fine if all that dirt is is a casing layer. I think usually you see a bit more poking through but it shouldn't effect things too much if you have a fully colonized straw substrate under that.

well looks like you actually do have a casing layer on there, and used straw for your bulk substrate.  so you should be good, you initiated fruiting at about the right time, but i would still recommend the bigger holes on the side stuffed w/ polyfil and the CFL for lighting.

Edit: fungisfarmer beat me to the punch lol

I would also do what mope says with putting bigger holes in the sides with polyfill. What you have there is basically a dubtub setup kind of like a mini monotub I guess. So you should put probably like 1.5" holes on all four sides and put polyfill in them. Then you can mist and fan a couple times a day depending on how the conditions are holding inside. The casing already looks plenty moist but as water starts evaporating out and creating humidity you'll need to mist to replace water so it doesn't dry out

Thanks guys!
I'll post an update in a week or so with the progress.
And MOPE, i'll look into the polyfil.. Think it would be okay to just buy a pillow and take it from there? haha

yeah you can use pillow stuffing, go to walmart and buy one of the $2 pillows that say "polyester fiberfill" on them.  some walmarts sell straight polyfil in bags in the fabrics section too, check it out
