Worm castings in PF
    #12032069 - 02/15/10 03:45 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Can you add worm castings the same way one would add h/poo to PF style and still expect those kind of results? I foresee the fiber content being too low for proper aeration, unless water content is perfect

43 minutes later, you bump a post- at 4:30 in the morning?

For Ps cubensis, I wouldn't recommend anything other than gypsum and BRF in cakes (and coffee in the water).
For other species that require poo, it's totally worth trying.

What Doc said. However there is no one single reason to use only brf for cakes. I use brown bread flour, buckwheat flour, brf, quinoa, oats. I am also using milk, coke and pineapple instead of water. As long as a substrate is nutritious you will be fine.

Don't take the bump seriously, I'm just severely bored and wanted to hear back and a decent number of people had already looked:tongue:

I'm using a combo of 50% BRF/50% worm shit(1.5c/1.5c), oyster shell, gypsum, then mixed water and about 3c of verm, to get to field...now I'm just wondering how I should go about PC these half pint jars of the mix....figured I'd just go with the reg time called for in reg BRFs

Tell me what your thoughts are on this particular mixture

Or a few early birds read it several times each.

Yeah, I'd do at least 90 mins, or whatever you normally do.

I'd use like a teaspoon of castings. BRF is really nutritious.
No need for oyster shell in this context.
And verm > anything else in cakes, don't skimp.

What species are you growing on these cakes?

Cubes, Tasmanian

I'll redo the mix, keeping one of these for sport and try something more BRF/verm friendly.
Keep in mind, I love how nice and airy the mixture is and how I don't need the verm layer due to the use of the 4 point poly lids I made....so long as the castings don't cause clumping, why would the cubes not survive on the good portion of BRF that is in there and just travel nicely through the castings? The brand I chose is Gaia Green Organic Castings, with all the beneficial bacteria(not that that matters after PC), "organic matter", humus, nitrate nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus I could possibly want.

90 mins . They will grow fine. However when you are making cakes, substrate composition is not that important. Water is much more important. Do not forget to make your cakes on the dry side and give them plenty of water during the fruiting stage. GL

If you used the right amount of verm, you could use more castings.
But I don't think that worm castings are as nutritious as BRF- I don't think you'll gain anything.

I'm simply trying to take the concept of more from less...being that I want as much substrate as possible, but also to get the jars to colonize as quick as possible, so i figure the less dense the cake, the easier/faster the spread...

LM: Totally took your advice, before you even gave it lol....left them at a good drip field, but not a stream allowing one, so it's only ever so slightly on the dry side...

Maybe we can all cross our fingers in hope that I have not made a fool of myself and that this will turn out to be the next killer sub(I don't want my name on it, just to help lmao)...although I doubt it'll be better than anything else I've tried so far

ALSO: I simply want these to colonize quickly, so I can take the cake and spawn to larger bulk, with more nutrients. Like LM was saying in his new Heat Tek, you don't want the spores to get lazy, so they'll have to fight for food when they get in these cakes, then they can get fat and lazy and huge when I transfer them to a super plush bulk sub....get it?

Right, that's what I'm saying about the verm.
If you moistened the verm like PF tek, you could probably coat that with 50/50 brf/worm poo. As long as it's fluffy and not muddy.

I just don't think it gains you anything. But we'll find out.

Yeah, I totally agree with the probability that I won't gain anything, but I figure it'll either take or not, and if it takes then what can it hurt to try...lol, I have a TON of free time on my hands

Good :super:. I agree. This is certainly not going to affect yields. At least you will prove once again that there are many alternatives to a 100% brf cake. That's what I am saying since I started growing mushrooms: "Use only brf" and "brf is best for cakes" are outdated info.

Edit: Anyway strains do not fight and they do not compete for nutes. They are not like humans.

Lmao, I know, I meant more like fight to survive the environment, rather than themselves  Just like in your Heat Bomb Tek, you said they need to survive or get lazy and perish....granted this isn't the same, but the ideology is there
