New method to my BRF madness
    #12031895 - 02/15/10 01:58 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So, does anyone else dream about mycelium growing and mycology at night? I get so worked up and excited about new growth and new methods, that it seems to be taking over my sanity and my girlfriend agrees.

Anyhow, here is something new I'd like to try...simply instead of using verm, I used poly in the 4 holes for inoculation...allows for great venting and helps eliminate the possibility of bugs in dry verm layer getting through to my beloved BRF
I also have a feeling it'll help in the cooking process and help keep the mix fluffy and airy.

This is all speculation, but if someone has anything to say about it, lay it on me, cause I'd like to know if anyone has tried this.

EDIT: Fuck, need to show you what I'm doing, don't I?

I don't use a dry verm layer at all, I hate the cleanup required. I either make lids with 4 self healing RTV ports, and 3 small filter holes in the center that are all covered with tyvek/synthetic filter or if I'm feeling lazy, just the 4 holes like regular PF tek, but cover with double layer micropore tape after inoculation. You get bigger cakes, and you can just pop them right out of the jar, no messy dry verm layer everywhere, and no wasted verm.

I haven't gotten any contaminants doing this yet, other than a few bacterial contams from a bad LC, which would have contaminated no matter what.

Dope! That's what I like to hear...my method basically follows yours in unison, just different material choice and I really love this buffering pad material, because it's easier to use and stuff the ports with it and it's dense/airy enough to allow perfect FAE when trimmed up nicely.
Wish me luck, amigo

Ripvan: Hell, yeah....madness is the mother of invention, IMO and nothing makes me nuttier than my love for mycology and great head *cough*

Sorry, I don't like double posts either, but I figured this was it's own bit...this is the material I use in my projects, unfortunately they don't have pictures for some reason

When cut to strips and then cut into 3rds, you can do a crap load of BRFs with it

Already am, I'm actually doing a WBS/Rye/Crack Corn mix, in quart and pint jars, but this is for those cakes that we know and love and want to continue using  It's a little painstaking, but worth the work in my opinion for great cakes later on
